UWSP Women; SNC, UWRF Men Earn NCAA Berths

The UW-Stevens Point women's team and the St. Norbert and UW-River Falls men's teams all will compete in the 2004 NCAA Div. III National Championships.

The UWSP women got the school's first NCAA berth and will play a first round game at Gustavus Adolphus, Minn., College on March 12, 13 or 14th. The Pointers, 17-6-4 overall, won the NCHA playoff championship. GAC won the MIAC playoff championship.

Other women's teams receiving bids were; Manhattanville, N.Y., Bowdoin, Maine, SUNY-Plattsburgh, Elmira, N.Y. and Middlebury, Vt. Bowdoin will play at Plattsburgh and Elmira plays at Middlebury in other first round games. The UWSP-GAC winner will play Manhattanville in one semifinal game.

St. Norbert earned the men's NCHA automatic berth by winning the league's playoff title over UWRF, 2-0, on Saturday. UWRF had to wait and earned an at-large berth.

Other men's institutions earning automatic berths include; Middlebury, Vt. (NESCAC), SUNY-Plattsburgh (SUNYAC), Wentworth, Mass., (ECAC Northeast) and Norwich, Vt., (ECAC East). Hobart, N.Y. and Curry, Mass., also earned at-large berths into the 2004 tourney.

In other games on Saturday, March 13, Curry is at Plattsburgh, Hobart travels to Norwich and Middlebury hosts Wentworth. The semifinals will be on March 19 with the finals set for March 20 at a site to be determined.
