UWRF Beats UST, 3-2 in OT, in NCAA First Round Game

UWRF won a 3-2 decision in overtime over St. Thomas in the NCAA tournament first round game in front of 1,026 fans at Hunt Arena Wednesday night.

The Falcons led 2-1 after the first period that was the score after two periods.

UWRF's Aaron Degerness opened the scoring at 10:20 of the first period with an unassisted goal, his ninth of the year. Just 55 seconds later, Murphy Dwyer scored his second goal of the year off assists from Jess Johnson and Steve Moe.

St. Thomas netted their first goal at 18:33 on a power play. Colin Greenlees scored his fifth goal of the year with assists to Brandon Wilcox and John Bottoms. The Tommies tied the game with less than five minutes remaining to play. Dustin Lick got the goal, his 24th of the year, with assists to Dan Krmpotich and Brandon Wilcox at 16:17.

UWRF's Jim Murphy turned out to be the hero when he netted the game winning goal 15:12 into overtime off an assist from Matt Elsen. It was Murphy's 15th goal of the year.

Falcon goal Andy Scanlon made 31 saves on 33 shots, including 13 saves in the third period. He improved his record to 13-3-3. St. Thomas goalie Zach Sikich turned away 35 of 38 Falcon shots adn finished the year 16-8-3.

The Falcons served eight penalties for 16 minutes while the Tommies served five for 10 minutes. UWRF was 0-3 on the power play while St. Thomas was 1-6.

With the win, the Falcons, now 21-5-4 overall advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals at St. Norbert. The Falcons are 0-2 against the Green Knights, 25-2-2, on the road this season including a 2-0 loss in the Peters Cup Finals on Saturday. The Falcons beat the Green Knights at Hunt Arena on Feb. 6, 6-4. Game time at the Cornerstone Arena will be 7:05 p.m.
