Peters Cup NCHA First Round Playoffs Set

Four Peters Cup NCHA first round playoff games will be held this weekend in the start of the league's playoff series.

St. Norbert (20-2-30) gets the No. 1 seed in the tourney after winning the league regular season title for the fourth straight season. SNC will host eighth place UW-Eau Claire (8-13-4). SNC went on the road last weekend and picked out three of a possible four points. SNC took a 4-0 win at St. Scholastica on Friday and came from behind to get a 2-2 overtime tie at UW-Superior on Saturday. UWEC had a tough road weekend losing at UW-Stout on Friday, 5-4, and at UW-River Falls on Saturday, 5-2.

No. 2 UWS (16-2-7) will host No. 7 St. Scholastica in a Port Cities series. UWS had a good home weekend getting three of four points. UWS beat Lake Forest, 6-3, on Friday before Saturday's tie with SNC. CSS (5-15-5) lost two home games - 4-0 to SNC on Friday and 5-2 to Lake Forest on Saturday.

No. 3 UW-River Falls will host No. 6 UW-Stout. UWRF needed to come up with some weekend points to secure the third spot and that's what they accomplished with a pair of home wins. UWRF beat UW-Stevens Point, 5-2, on Friday and topped UWEC by the same score on Saturday. UW-St (9-12-4) earned a split over the weekend to secure the No. 6 spot. The Blue Devils topped UWEC on Friday, 5-4, but lost to UW-Stevens Point on Saturday, 8-2.

UWSP, the tourney's No. 4 seed, will host LFC, which finished fifth. It was a close race for the No. 4 spot and UWSP earned it by a single point. UWSP (12-11-3) and LFC (11-13-1) split their regular season games with each team winning, 3-2.

The first round is a best two out of three game series using the minigame if necessary. If games are tied on Friday and Saturday, one five minute overtime period will be played. If the series is tied after Saturday's game, a 20 minute minigame will be played. If the minigame is tied, 20 minute overtime periods will be played until a winner is determined.

The four winning teams will meet in the playoff semifinals on Feb. 26. Those games will be played at the sites of the highest remaining seeded teams. The championship game is set for March 5, again at the site of the highest remaining seeded team.

The NCHA playoff champion receives the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Div. III Championship series. Other league teams would have to earn an at-large berth to participate.
