Falcons Place Seventh at WIAC Meet

Feb. 18, 2001

The Falcons scored 51.5 points and placed seventh at the WIAC Meet held Sunday at UW-Stevens Point.

Jeff Lambrecht placed fourth for the Falcons at 174 pounds. He lost his first match to an Eau Claire wrestler, 6-0. He then pinned a Platteville opponent in 2:02 and won by default over a Whitewater opponent. He then lost to an Eau Claire wrestler by a pin at 2:35.

Neil Happel placed fifth at 197. He lost to a Whitewater opponent, 17-4, but then beat an Eau Claire wrestler, 7-3. He lost to an Oshkosh opponent by a pin at 1:50, but came back to place fifth with a 4-3 win over a Platteville opponent.

Gary Hackel also placed fifth at 157. He beat an Oshkosh opponent, 9-2, but then lost to a La Crosse wrestler, 13-4. He then lost to a Platteville opponent, 3-2 but came back to beat an Oshkosh opponent, 15-5 to place fifth.

Dana Johnson placed fifth at 126. He first lost to a La Crosse opponent, 19-2 and was then pinned by an Oshkosh opponent in 5:46. In the match for fifth he won by default.

La Crosse won the team title with 156 points followed by Stevens Point 98, Eau Claire 95.5, Oshkosh 87, Platteville 85, Whitewater 80 and the Falcons.

Falcons Crush St. Thomas

Feb. 14, 2001

The Falcons won nine of 10 matches to beat St. Thomas, 49-6, Wednesday night at the Knowles Building.

Paul Hughes (184), Dana Johnson (125) and Chad Flanagan (165) all won by pins to lead the Falcons.

The Falcons will next wrestle at the WIAC meet on Sunday at UW-Stevens Point with action starting at 9 a.m.

Falcons Compete at Stevens Point

Feb. 10, 2001

The Falcon grapplers lost to UW-Stevens Point, 45-6, in a dual meet on Saturday.

The Falcons' only points of the afternoon was a forfeit win at 125 pounds received by Dana Johnson.

Five different Falcons were pinned on the afternoon. The Falcons will next wrestle against UW-Stout on Wednesday. The match will start at the Knowles Building at 7 p.m.

Falcons Compete at UW-EC Invite

Feb. 3, 2001

Gary Hackel, Neil Happel and Nate Demulling all finished second in the consolation championship round at the UW-Eau Claire Invitaitonal held Saturday.

The Falcons placed in a tie for seventh place scoring 12 points.

Hackel, wrestling at 157 pounds lost to Augsburgšs Vince DePatto in the consolation finals. Happel, at 197 pounds, lost to Augsburgšs Jeremiah Knabe, 7-5 in the consolation finals. Demulling, wrestling at 185 pounds, lost to La Crossešs Steve Pape, 3-1 in the consolation finals. Hackel and Happel finished the tourney with 1-2 records and Demulling was 2-2.

The Falcons will next host St. Thomas on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Knowles Building.

Falcons Lose Dual Meet to St. John's, 30-12

Jan. 30, 2001

Gary Hackel, Jeff Lambrecht and Nate Demulling all won individual matches, but the Falcons dropped a 30-12 decision to St. John's Tuesday night at the Knowles Building.

Hackel took a 4-0 win at 157 pounds. Lambrecht pinned his opponent at 4:00 at 174 and Demulling took a 13-9 win at 285 pounds.

The Falcons will face St. Olaf and Cornell, Iowa on Thursday in Northfield, Minn., wth action starting at 5 p.m.



Falcons Lose Dual Meet at Whitewater

Jan. 22, 2001

Gary Hackel won a 2-0 decision at 157 pounds, but the Falcons dropped a 38-3 decision at UW-Whitewater Tuesday night.

Hackel beat Norman Hotz for the team's only points in the WIAC match. The Falcons are now 4-8-1 in dual meets.

The Falcons will be in action again on Tuesday when they host St. John's at the Knowles Building. Action starts at 7 p.m.



Falcons Lose Dual Meet to Platteville

Jan. 20, 2001

Nate Demulling and Neil Happel won matches, but the Falcons dropped a 36-12 decision to UW-Platteville Saturday afternoon at UW-Eau Claire.

Demulling, wrestling at 285, pinned Jason Glowdoski in 5:30 to win. Happel picked up another six points with a forfeit win.

The Falcons will next be at Whtiewater on Tuesday with the match starting at 7 p.m.



Falcons Lose Dual Meet at Oshkosh

Jan. 18, 2001

The Falcons lost a 32-6 decision at UW-Oshkosh Thursday night.

Nate Demulling won at 285 defeating Adam Pearson, 6-3. The other Falcon points came at 157 where Gary Hackel defeated Mike Uyeda, 6-3.

The Falcons will next wrestle at UW-Eau Claire on Saturday against UWEC and UW-Platteville



Falcons Compete at Central Invitational

Jan. 13, 2001

The Falcon grapplers had a rough day at the Central Invitational, placing no individual wrestler in the top three of any weightclass.

The team had five wrestlers win in the first round, but no wrestler was able to beat his second round opponent.

The team's best finisher was Neil Happel who tied for fourth at 197 pounds. Happel beat his first-round opponent Steve Alcorn from Coe College before dropping a 2-1 decision to Nick Esposito of Loras. Happel eventually lost to Joe Compton of Cornell in the consolation semifinals.

The wrestlers will next hit the mat Jan. 18 at UW-Oshkosh. The dual meet starts at 7 p.m.

 

Falcons Defeat Carleton

Jan. 12, 2001

The Falcons won six of 10 matches en route to a 33-7 win over Carleton College Thursday night at the Knowles Building.

At 125 Chris Henning won by a pin at 1:59. Paul Hughes took a 6-1 win at 184, Neil Happel won by a pin at 4:56 at 197 and Nate Demulling won by a pin at 5:05 at 285. Dana Johnson (133) and Gary Hackel (157) both won by forfeit.

The Falcons will next compete in the Central, Iowa, College Invitational on Saturday.











Johnson Leads Falcons at North Country Invite

Jan. 6, 2001

Falcon 125 pounder Dana Johnson placed fifth at the North Country Invitational to help his team to an 11th place team finish.

The Falcons totaled 18 points and Johnson earned 11 with his fifth place finish. The University of Mary won the team title with 162 points followed by Augsburg with 107.

The Falcons will be in action again on Thursday when they host Carleton at 7 p.m. in the Knowles Building.




Blugolds Pin Grapplers

Dec. 6, 2000

UW-Eau Claire downed UW-River Falls 30-6 Wednesday evening in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference bout.

Chad Flanagan (165) and Neil Happel (197) were the only Falcons to collect victories. Flanagan recorded a 2-0 win, while Happel won 5-4.

The Falcons will return to action Saturday when they compete in the St. Cloud State (Minn.) University Invite.


Wrestlers Post Undefeated Mark At Own Tourney

Dec. 2, 2000

UW-River Falls kicked off its 2000-2001 season Saturday with a 2-0-1 record at its own Dual Tournament.

The Falcons started the day with a 32-16 pasting of Concordia-Wisc. Heavyweight Nate Demulling pinned his foe, 157-pounder Gary Hackel earned a technical fall and 149-pounder Jacob Hovden posted a 10-6 win for the Falcons, while Concordia forfeited at three weightclasses.

UW-RF then wrestled St. Olaf to a 21-21 stalemate. Neil Happel (197), Hackel and Chad Flanagan (165) picked up decisions for the Falcons, and St. Olaf forfeited at 125 and 133.

The Falcons capped the competition with a 27-15 win over Waldorf. Cail Morrison (149) pinned his opponent in 45 seconds and Hackel earned an escape in double overtime for a 5-4 win. Waldorf forfeited at Hwt, 133 and 165.

Hackel paced the Falcons with a 3-0 individual mark.

St. Olaf matched the Falcons 2-0-1 mark, Waldorf was 1-2 and Concordia went 0-3.

UW-RF will return to action Wednesday, when they travel to UW-Eau Claire to battle the Blugolds in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference dual. The meet is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
