Falcons Lose to Whitewater in WIAC Finals

Nov. 9, 2002

The Falcons lost, 3-0, to UW-Whitewater in the championship match in the WIAC Tournament held Saturday at the Karges Center.

UWW took a 30-25, 30-21, 30-28 win to get the WIAC's automatic berth into the NCAA Div. III tournament.

Krystle Brune led the Falcons with 12 kills and Melissa Tvrdik had 10. Erin Oberholtzer led the Falcons wtih 28 assists. Hillary Keene paced UWRF with 17 digs while Oberholtzer had 11 and Molly Schock and Karen ZumMallen each had 10. Tvrdik led the Falns with three block assists.

The Falcons are still in the running for an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. The NCAA tournament field will be announced on Sunday, Nov. 10.

Falcons Top Eau Claire; Face Whitewater For WIAC Title

The Falcons beat UW-Eau Claire, 3-0, and will play UW-Whitewater at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday for the WIAC Tournamnet championship.

The Falcons, now 31-7 overall, beat UWEC, 30-14, 30-24, 30-28 at the Karges Center. In the other semifinal, Whitewater beat Stout, 30-28, 30-21, 21-30, 30-22.

Krystle Brune led the Falcons with 16 kills. Karen ZumMallen had 13 and Melissa Tvrdik had 12. Erin Oberholtzer led the team with 44 assists. ZumMallen had 15 digs, Jennifer Braun had 13 and Molly Schock 10. Petersen led the Falcons with one solo block and four block assists.

The winner of the WIAC Tournament earns the WIAC's NCAA automatic berth.

Falcons Dominate in First Round of WIAC Playoffs

Nov. 5, 2002

The Falcons defeated UW-Superior, 30-14, 30-24, 30-11, in the first round of the WIAC playoffs Tuesday evening at the Karges Center.

UWRF will host the WIAC semifinals and finals this weekend at the Karges Center. On Friday at 5 p.m., Whitewater plays Stout and the Falcons play Eau Claire at 7:30 p.m. A third place match will be played on Saturday at noon with the championship match to follow at 2:30 p.m.

Against Superior, Krystle Brune led the Falcons in kills with 15 and Melissa Tvrdik followed with 14. Karen ZumMallen had 15 defensive digs for the Falcons; Jennifer Braun and Erin Oberholtzer both had 14 defensive digs. Erin Oberholtzer led the Falcons with 36 assists and Molly Schock led the team with three service aces. Kristen Brandt had two solo and two block assists.

The Falcons advance to the WIAC semifinals with a 30-7 overall record.

 

Falcons Finish 4-0 at Classic

Nov. 2, 2002

The Falcons won two more matches on Saturday to finish 4-0 in the Bob & Steve's BP Amoco Classic.

Saturday the Falcons beat Superior, 30-20, 30-23, 30-17 and Augsburg, 30-13, 30-17, 30-15 to raise their record to 29-7 overall.

Against Superior, Melissa Tvrdik led the Falcons with 12 kills and Erin Oberholtzer led the team with 32 assists. Sarah Halverson led the Falcons with four aces and Karen ZumMallen led the team with 14 digs. Tvrdik led the team with four block assists. Against Augsburg, Krystle Brune had 12 kills and Nina Petersen 10 to lead the Falcons. Oberholtzer had 26 assists and Shannon Goranowski led the team with four aces. ZumMallen again led the Falcons with 19 digs. Petersen and Tvrdik each had two block assists.

Tvrdik and ZumMallen were both named to the All-Tournament team.

The Falcons will host UW-Superior on Tuesday in the first round of the WIAC Tournament. Action stats at 7 p.m. at the Karges Center.

Falcons Win Two at Classic

Nov. 1, 2002

The Falcons got back on the winning track winning both their matches in the Bob & Steve's BP Amoco Classic Friday at the Karges Center.

The Falcons opened with a 30-26, 30-17, 30-22 win over St. Olaf, and came back later with a 30-12, 30-18, 30-22 win over Illinois College.

Against St. Olaf, Melissa Tvrdik led the Falcons with 13 kills and Nina Petersen had 11. Erin Oberholtzer led the team with 36 assists. Karen ZumMallen and Molly Schock each had three aces. ZumMallen had 10 digs and Jen Braun nine. Tvrdik had five block assists.

Against IC, Krystle Brune and Tvrdik each had 13 kills and ZumMallen had 10. Oberholtzer led the team with 37 assists and four aces. ZumMallen had 21 digs and Tvrdik had four block assists.

Saturday the Falcons, now 28-7 overall, host the second day of the Classic with action starting at 9:30 a.m. at the Karges Center.

Falcons Fall to UW-Stout

Oct. 23, 2002

UW-Stout ended the Falcons 16-match winning streak Wednesday night, taking the match three games to one.

UW-Stout jumped to a two game lead taking games one and two, 30-27 and 30-26, before the Falcons countered with a third game win 30-26. UW-Stout wrapped up the match with a 30-27 game four win. UW-RF still holds the No. 1 seed in the WIAC tournament.

Krystle Brune led the Falcons with 18 kills and Karen ZumMallen had 16. Erin Oberholtzer led UWRF with 47 assists. Sarah Halverson and ZumMallen each had two aces. Jennifer Braun and ZumMallen led the Falcons with 13 digs each. Gina Anderson and Melissa Tvrdik each had four block assists and ZumMallen had one solo block adn three block assists.

The Falcons are ranked fifth in the Oct. 23 AVCA poll.

The Falcons are now 24-4 overall and 7-1 in the WIAC.

The Falcons see action next at the Whitewater Invitational on Oct. 25 at 4 p.m.

Falcons Top La Crosse

Oct. 19, 2002

The Falcons won their eighth straight home match of the season beating UW-La Crosse on Saturday afternoon at the Karges Center. This was the sixteenth straight win for the Falcons which ties a school record. The Falcon record for consuctive wins in a season is 16 by both the 1995 and 1996 teams.

The Falcons beat the Eagles, 30-21, 30-21, 30-20.

Karen ZumMallen led the Falcons with 15 kills and she had 13 digs. Molly Schock led the Falcons with 14 digs. Jennifer Braun finished with 12 digs. Erin Oberholtzer led the Falcons wtih 35 assistsand 4 aces.

The Falcons were ranked fifth in the Oct. 16 AVCA Div. III Coaches poll.

The Falcons, now 24-3 overall and 7-0 in the WIAC, are at Stout on Wednesday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. in another WIAC match. Action starts at 2 p.m.

Falcons Top Platteville

Oct. 18, 2002

The Falcons won their seventh straight home match of the season beating UW-Platteville on Friday night at the Karges Center.

The Falcons beat the Pioneers, 30-16, 30-23, 30-14. It's the Falcons 15th straight win this year. The Falcon record for consuctive wins in a season is 16 by both the 1995 and 1996 teams.

Krystle Brune led the Falcons with 15 kills. Nina Petersen and Melissa Tvrdik each had 14 kills. Karen ZumMallen led the Falcons with 16 digs and she had one solo block and three block assists. Jennifer Braun finished with 15 digs. Erin Oberholtzer led the Falcons wtih 43 assists. Molly Schock had two aces.

The Falcons, now 23-3 overall and 6-0 in the WIAC, host La Crosse on Saturday in another WIAC match. Action starts at 2 p.m.

Falcons Finish 4-0 at IWU Tourney

Oct. 12, 2002

The Falcons won their final two matches Saturday to finish undefeated at the Illinois Wesleyan Tournament.

At noon the Falcons dropped their first set of the day, 23-30, before rebounding to win three straight, 30-15, 30-17, 30-22, and thus beating Dubuque 3-1.

UWRF then played again at 2 p.m. against tourney host Illinois Wesleyan and came out straight-set winners with scores of 30-21, 30-21 and 30-24.

The Falcons were ranked fifth in the Oct. 9 AVCA Div. III Coaches poll.

The Falcons, now 22-3 overall and 5-0 in the WIAC, host two conference opponents next weekend. Friday at 7 p.m., UW-Platteville comes to the Karges Center to attempt to dethrone the Falcons. Then on Saturday at 2 p.m., UWRF hosts UW-La Crosse.

Falcons Win Two at IWU Tourney

Oct. 11, 2002

The Falcons won two more matches at the Illinois Wesleyan tournament held Friday in Bloomington, Ill.

UWRF opened with a 3-0 win over Millikin. UWRF won, 30-14, 30-17, 30-14. The Falcons came back later to beat Westminister, 3-0, 30-14, 30-17, 30-20. UWRF has now won 12 straight matches.

The Falcons, now 20-3 overall and 5-0 in the WIAC, continue play on Saturday. UWRF faces Dubuque at noon and Illinois Wesleyan at 2 p.m.

Falcons Top Eau Claire

The Falcons won three straight games to beat UW-Eau Claire in a WIAC match Wednesday night at the Karges Center.

The Falcons won, 30-24, 30-27 and 30-23 to run their home record to 6-0 this year. UWRF has won 10 straight matches.

Krystle Brune, Kristin Brandt and Karen ZumMallen each had 10 kills for the Falcons. Erin Oberholtzer led the team with 36 assists and three aces. Jennifer Bruan lead the team with 14 digs. Oberholtzer and ZumMallen each had 13 digs. Molly Schock had 12 digs. Nina Petersen had one solo block and four block assists.

The Falcons, now 18-3 overall and 4-0 in the WIAC, compete in the Illinois Wesleyan Tournament this weekend. Friday the Falcons play Millikin at 3 p.m. and Westminister at 7 p.m. Saturday the Falcons face Dubuque at noon and Illinois Wesleyan at 2 p.m.

Falcons Win at Stevens Point

The Falcons won three straight games at UW-Stevens Point to improve their overall record to 17-3.

UWRF took the games, 30-26, 30-18 and 38-36 to improve to 4-0 in WIAC play. UWSP drops to 4-17 overall and 1-3 in league play.

Karen ZumMallen led the Falcons with 19 kills. She also had 11 digs. Melissa Tvrdik added 11 kills, seven digs and two block assists. Nina Petersen had 10 kills, three digs and four block assists. Erin Oberholtzer led the Falcons with 46 assists and she ahd six digs. Jennifer Braun led the team with 22 digs. Krystle Brune finished with nine kills, a solo block and two block assists. Kristin Brandt had two kills, seven digs and a team-high three block assists.

Wednesday the Falcons host UW-Eau Claire in a WIAC match that starts at 7 p.m. at the Karges Center.

Falcons Beat Superior, 3-0

Oct. 2, 2002

The Falcons won three straight games to beat UW-Superior Wednesday night at the Karges Center.

The Falcons won, 30-17, 30-12 and 30-22 to raise their overall record to 16-3.

Falcon Erin Oberholtzer led the Falcons with 10 digs and 36 assists. Krystle Brune and Nina Petersen each had 11 kills to lead the UWRF attack. Kristen Brandt and Petersen each had six block assists.

Yellowjackets Abby Glawe and Kim Dunbar each had 14 digs. Glawe also had a team high 25 assists. Jackie Rafter had three block assists.

Saturday the Falcons return to WIAC play when they play at UW-Stevens Point at noon. The Falcons are 3-0 in WIAC play.

Falcons Finish With Four Wins at UWEC Tourney

Sept. 28, 2002

The Falcons won two more matches on Saturday and finished 4-0 at the UW-Eau Claire Tournament.

The Falcons beat Stevens Point, 3-1 and Eau Claire, 3-1. UWRF topped Stevens Point, 30-27, 21-30, 30-20, 30-26
and Eau Claire, 28-30, 30-23, 30-16, 30-27 to improved its record to 15-3 overall. Outside hitter Melissa Tvrdik and setter Erin Oberholtzer were both named to the eight-player All-Tournament team.

Wednesday the Falcons return to WIAC play when they host UW-Superior at 7 p.m. at the Karges Center. The Falcons are 2-0 in WIAC play.

Falcons Win Twice at UWEC Tourney

Sept. 27, 2002

The Falcons won twice at the UW-Eau Claire Tournament on Friday night.

The Falcons opened with a 3-0 win over 12th ranked UW-Stout, and came back later for a 3-0 win over UW-Superior. The Falcons beat Stout, 30-15, 30-22, 30-20 and Superior, 30-16, 30-24, 30-22, to raise their record to 13-3 overall.

In the win over Stout, Karen ZumMallen led the Falcons with 14 kills and Melissa Tvrdik had 11. Erin Oberholtzer led the team with 40 assists. Tvrdik had four blocks while Kristin Brandt and ZumMallen had three each. Sarah Halverson and ZumMallen each had two aces. Jen Braun led the team with 21 digs.

The Falcons play Stevens Point at 1 p.m. and Eau Claire at 3 p.m. on Saturday at the UW-EC Tourney.

Falcons Get Upset Win at UWW

Sept. 21, 2002

The Falcons upset No. 6 ranked UW-Whitewater at UWW on Saturday afternoon. UWW won the first game, 30-23, but the Falcons came back to take the next two, 30-28 and 30-19. UWW put the match into a fifth game with a 30-15 win in game four. In the final game, the Falcons took a 15-13 win.

Melissa Tvrdik led the Falcons wtih 15 kills. She had one solo block and three block assists. Nina Petersen had 13 kills with three block assists. Karen ZumMallen finished with 12 kills and a team-high 21 digs. Erin Oberholtzer led the team with 43 assists and two aces. Jennifer Braun had 18 digs and Sarah Halverson and Hillary Keene each had 16. Kristin Brandt, who finished with eight kills, had three block assists.

The Falcons, now 11-3 overall and 2-0 in the WIAC, play at the UW-Eau Claire Invitational this weekend.

Falcons defeat UW-Oshkosh

Sept. 20, 2002

The Falcons defeated UW-Oshkosh 3 games to 1, Friday afternoon, improving their overall record to 10-3, and 1-0 in WIAC play.

The Falcons defeated the Titans, 30-26, 33-35, 30-27, 30-20. Krystle Brune led the Falcons with 18 kills. Melissa Tvrdik had 16 and Nina Petersen and Karen ZumMallen each had 13. Erin Oberholtzer led the team with 53 assists. ZumMallen had three aces. Jennifer Braun led the Falcons wuth 25 digs and ZumMallen had 24. Tvrdik led the team with two solo blocks and six block assists. Kristin Brandt also had six block assists.

The Falcons, now 10-3 overall and 1-0 in the WIAC, play at UW-Whitewater on Saturday at noon.

Falcons Finish 2-2 at St. Thomas

Sept. 14, 2002

The Falcons finished with a 2-2 record at the St. Thomas Invitational held Friday and Saturday.

On Friday the Falcons finished 1-1. They lost their first match to Macalester, 15-30, 30-28, 30-26, 30-22. But they came back to beat Texas Lutheran, 30-28, 26-30, 30-24, 32-30.

Saturday the Falcons also split losing to St. Thomas, 30-25, 30-28, 30-28, but coming back to beat Loras, 30-28, 26-30, 30-24, 32-30. The Falcons handed Loras their only loss in the tourney. Falcons Krystle Brune and Melissa Tvrdik were named to the All-Tourney team. The Falcons are now 9-3 overall.

Friday the Falcons open WIAC play at Oshkosh. Action starts at 7 p.m.

Falcons Finish Second at UWP Tourney

Sept. 7, 2002

The Falcons finished second at the UW-Platteville Tournament held over the weekend.

Friday the Falcons won both matches they played. They opened with a 30-26, 30-26, 30-20 win over Illinois Wesleyan. Later they came back with a 30-14, 30-13, 30-16 win over Knox. Saturday the Falcons advanced to the championship match with a 30-25, 30-17, 30-16 win over Platteville. But in the title match Elmhurst topped the Falcons, 30-28, 30-23, 30-22. Elmhurst was ranked in a tie for 17th place in the AVCA Div. III pre-season poll. UWRF's Melissa Tvrdik was named to the All-Tourney team.

The Falcons play next weekend at the St. Thomas Invitational.

Falcons Go Unbeaten in First Tournament of the Season

Aug. 31, 2002

The Falcons won all four games in the River Falls Tournament this weekend.

The Falcons defeated Macalester, 30-16, 30-16, 30-17 in their first game of the day. They then beat Bethel 30-23, 30-28, 30-24.

Falcon Senior, Karen ZumMallen, led the team in kills with 11 in the first match and 11 more in the second. Melissa Tvrdik had 13 kills in the Bethel game. Molly Shock had 16 assists against Macalester and 21 against Bethel. Erin Oberholtzer had 13 in the first game and 21 in the second.

The Falcons see action again next weekend, September 6-7, at the Platteville Tourney.

 

Falcons Defeat First Two Oppenents in UWRF Tourney

Aug. 30, 2002

The Falcons defeated St. Scholastica, 30-16, 30-26, and 30-20 in their first action of the season. They then beat St. Benedict, 30-20, 27-30, 30-19, and 30-24.

Falcon Senior, Karen ZumMallen, led the team in kills with 11 in the first match and 14 in the second. Molly Shock had 25 assists against St. Scholastica and Erin Oberholtzer had 18 against St. Benedict. ZumMallen had 7 aces total.

The Falcons continue their tournament tomorrow playing at 9:30 am against Macalester and 3:30 pm against Bethel.
