Five Named to All-WIAC Volleyball Teams

Falcon volleyball players Krystle Brune (Jr., Oakdale, Minn.), Melissa Tvrdik (Jr., Farwell, Minn.), Karen ZumMallen (Sr., Grand Rapids, Minn.), Nina Petersen (So., Byron, Minn.) and Jennifer Braun (Jr., Morristown, Minn.) have all been named to 2002 All-WIAC teams.

Brune, Tvrdik and ZumMallen were all named to the first team, Petersen was given honorable mention and Braun was named to the defensive team.

Brune, who was named to the 2001 All-WIAC first team, finished second on the team in kills with 407. She hit her 1,000th career kill during the season and ended the year with 1,202. The outside hitter finished with a .236 hitting persentage. She had 10 solo and 63 total blocks.

Tvrdik, who was given honorable mention to the All-WIAC team in 2001, was second on the team with 414 kills and she had a team high .345 hitting percentage. The hitter was third in aces with 49 and had 135 digs. She led the Falcons with 17 solo and 133 total blocks.

ZumMallen led the Falcons with 448 kills and had a .234 hitting percentage. The hitter led the Falcons wth 58 aces and was second with 537 digs. She had 13 solo and 58 total blocks.

Petersen finished with 289 kills and a .187 hitting percentage. The outside hitter had eight solo and 104 total blocks, second on the team.

Braun played excellent defense for the Falcons all season. The outside hitter led the team in digs with 545.

The Falcons finished the 2002 season with a 31-8 overall record. UWRF tied for first place in the WIAC regular season standings with a 7-1 record, and finished second in the WIAC Tournament, losing to UW-Whitewater in the title match.
