Falcons Top Stout For Third at WIAC Tourney

The Falcons beat Stout, three games to one, for third
place at the WIAC Tourney played at Oshkosh Saturday afternoon.
The Falcons won, 30-22, 26-30, 30-25, 30-27, to raise
their record to 20-17. Stout goes to 24-9.
Karen ZumMallen and Melissa Tvrdik each had 15 kills.
Jennifer Braun had 13 and Krystle Brune finished with 12. Amy Lundberg
had 31 assists and Molly Schock 24. ZumMallen had three aces and led the
team with 22 digs. Lundberg, Braun and Becky Hylland each had 20 digs
while Sarah Halverson had 19. Tvrdik had one solo block and nine assists.
Whitewater beat Oshkosh, 30-12, 30-20, 30-19, in the title
match.
Falcons Lose to Whitewater at WIAC Tourney

The Falcons lost a three games to
none decision to Whitewater at the WIAC tournament semi-finals Friday
night in Oshkosh.
Whitewater won, 30-15, 30-23, 30-22. The Falcons are 19-17
overall while UWW goes to 30-2.
Krystle Brune led the Falcons with eight kills and Karen
ZumMallen had seven. Amy Lundberg had 19 assists. ZumMallen led the Falcons
with 15 digs and Jennifer Braun had 12. Melissa Tvrdik had five block
assists.
Saturday the Falcons play the loser of the Oshkosh-Stout
match in the third place match.
Volleyball Team Ekes Past UW-EC In 3-2 Marathon, Advances
To Second Round Of WIAC Tourney

UW-River Falls outlasted UW-Eau Claire 3-2 in a thrilling,
2-hour, 20-minute WIAC Tournament first-round tilt played Tuesday evening
at the Karges Center.
With the win, the No. 3-seeded Falcons improved to 19-16 on the season,
earned a second-round berth against UW-Whitewater (30-2), the No. 2 seed,
to be played Friday vs. Whitewater in Oshkosh, and avenged a 3-0 (30-28,
30-24, 30-28) setback to the Blugolds Sept. 26 in WIAC regular season
play.
UW-EC, the No. 6 seed, finished its season with a 23-9 overall mark.
Tuesday's affair was wild from the get-go, as UW-EC captured game one,
a 72-point marathon, 37-35. UW-RF, however, pulled even with a 30-22 game-two
win.
After the Blugolds took a 2-1 advantage by winning the next game 30-23,
UW-RF extended the match to a fifth frame with a 32-30 game-four victory.
The Falcons dominated the deciding game, which they won 15-11.
Karen ZumMallen led the Falcons with 23 kills. Krystle Brune had 16 and
Jennifer Braun 15. Amy Lundberg had four aces and 39 assists. Braun led
the team with 20 digs and Becky Hylland had 19. Hylland also had five
block assits and Melissa Tvrdik had four.
Volleyball Team Goes 1-1 in Second Day of Tourney

The Falcons split two matches on Saturday in their own
Trick or Treat Tournament at the Karges Center. The Falcons finished 3-1
in the two-day event.
The Falcons lost to Augustana in their first match of
the day, 30-18, 19-30, 30-28, 30-27. But the Falcons ended on a high note
beating Superior, 30-15, 30-15, 30-21.
The Falcons are now 18-16 overall.
UWRF will host UW-Eau Claire on Tuesday in a WIAC tournament
playoff match at the Karges Center. Action starts at 7p.m.
Falcons Go 2-0 at Trick or Treat Tourney

UW-River Falls dominated Aurora (Ill.) 30-8, 30-11, 30-18
Friday evening to finish the first day of its own Trick or Treat Classic
with a 2-0 mark.
The Falcons, who now sport a 17-15 season record, defeated St. Scholastica
3-1 (30-32, 30-17, 3-19, 30-21) earlier in the day.
UW-RF will resume tournament play at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
Falcons Win at St. Thomas

Krystle Brune had 13 kills to help lead the Falcon volleyball
team to a win at St. Thomas Monday night.
The Falcons won three straight games, 34-32, 30-28, 30-28,
to raise their overall record to 15-15. Melissa Tvrdik added 11 kills,
Jennifer Braun had nine and Karen ZumMallen eight. Amy Lundberg had 24
assists and Molly Schock 15 with three service aces. Braun led the team
with 17 digs and Becky Hylland had 10. ZumMallen led the team with four
block assists.
The Falcons will host the annual Trick or Treat Tournament this weekend.
Action starts at 4 p.m. on Friday. All matches are at the Karges Center.
Saturday the tournament resumes at 9:30 a.m. Superior, Stout, Augustana,
Eau Claire, Aurora and St. Scholastic join the Falcons in the two-day
event.
Top Ranked Whitewater Beats Falcons, 3-0

UW-Whitewater, the top ranked team in the AVCA Div. III
poll, beat the Falcons, three games to none, Saturday afternoon at Karges
Center.
UWW won, 30-27, 30-27 and 30-25 to raise its record to
24-1 overall and a perfect 7-0 in the WIAC. UWRF is now 14-15 overall
and 5-3 in the WIAC.
Karen ZumMallen led the Falcons with nine kills. Melissa
Tvrdik added eight and Krystle Brune had seven. Amy Lundberg had 14 assists
and Molly Schock 11. Jennifer Braun and ZumMallen each had 11 kills. Tvrdik
had one solo block and three block assits.
Monday the Falcons will play at St. Thomas with the match starting at
7:30 p.m.
Falcon Volleyball Splits at Titan Volleyball Tournament

The UW-River Falls volleyball team split four contests
at Illinois Wesleyan's Titan Volleyball Tournament.
On Friday, the team fell to host Illinois Wesleyan 30-26,
21-30, 30-25, 30-28 before beating Aurora in straight games, 30-20, 30-19,
30-24.
On Saturday, the Falcons beat national powerhouse Central
in a thrilling five-game match, 25-30, 32-30, 23-30, 33-31, 15-11. They
were then set back by Washington University, 30-20, 30-13, 30-18.
The Falcons will next play UW-Oshkosh on Friday at the
Karges Center in a WIAC tilt. The match is set for 7 p.m.
Falcons Burns Blue Devils, 3-1

UW-River Falls upset UW-Stout 3-1 (31-29, 30-15,
27-30, 30-28) in a WIAC contest held Wednesday evening at the Karges Center.
With the victory over the Blue Devils, ranked No. 15 in the AVCA NCAA
Division III Coaches Top 20 poll, the Falcons improved their season record
to 12-11 and league mark to 5-1. Stout, which fell out of the WIAC unbeaten
ranks, fell to 17-4 and 5-1.
"It was a big momentum and confident boost for us," UW-RF coach
Patti Ford said. "Our patience has paid off. Stout is a very good
team, and this was a good match that could have gone either way."
The Falcons fell behind 18-10 in the opening game before rallying for
a 31-29 victory that clearly changed the outlook of the match.
Sophomore Krystle Brune recorded a game-high 15 kills for the Falcons,
while junior Sara McKee added 13 and junior Karen ZumMallen pitched in
12. Sophomore Amy Lundberg provided 27 of UW-RF's 32 assists. ZumMallen
and sophomore Jennifer Braun tallied 17 digs each.
The Falcons will return to action Friday, when they begin play at the
two-day Illinois Wesleyan Tournament.
Falcons Win at La Crosse, 3-0
Oct. 6, 2001
The Falcon volleyball team took a 3-0 win at UW-La
Crosse Saturday afternoon to raise its WIAC record to 4-1.
The Falcons won, 30-22, 30-21, 30-25 to raise its overall record to 11-11.
UWLC goes to 9-12 overall adn 2-3 in the WIAC.
Krystle Brune led the Falcons wtih 12 kills while Jennifer
Braun had 11. Amy Lundberg had 20 assists and Molly Schock added 14 and
a team-high three aces. Karen ZumMallen and Braun each had 18 digs while
Schock had 16. Brune and Melissa Tvrdik each had four block assists.
Wednesday the Falcons host UW-Stout in a WIAC match at
the Karges Center that starts at 7 p.m.
Falcons Beat WIAC Rivals Platteville, 3-2

UW-River Falls volleyball squad won in a 3-2
(30-25, 29-31, 27-39, 30-21, 15-11) decision to WIAC rival UW-Platteville
Friday night in Platteville.
With this win the Falcons are now 10-11 overall and 3-1 in the WIAC. UW-Platteville
is now 15-6, 0-3.
Sophomore Krystle Brune led the Falcons in kills with
20, sophomore Amy Lundberg totaled 36 assists, and junior Karen ZumMallen
had the team-high 24 digs. ZumMallen also had 15 kills and Jennifer Braun
added 12 kills and 19 digs.
The Falcons return to action Saturday at UW-La Crosse. The match starts
at 2 p.m..
Falcons Finish 1-3 at UWW Tourney
Sept. 29, 2001
The Falcons finished with a 1-3 record at the
UW-Whitewater tournament held Friday and Saturday.
On Friday the Falcons split in two matches. The Falcons
started strong wiht a 3-1 win over Calvin. The Falcons won, 30-32, 30-22,
30-25, 32-30. The Falcons then dropped a 3-0 decision to 17th ranked UW-Oshkosh.
The Titans won, 30-23, 30-16, 30-22.
On Saturday the Falcons opened with a 3-2 loss to Simpson.
Simpson won 23-30, 30-22, 30-27, 19-30, 15-8. The Falcons then lost, 3-1,
to third-ranked Central, 30-32, 31-29, 31-29, 30-24.
Friday the Falcons are at UW-Platteville in a WIAC match
that starts at 7 p.m.
Falcons Lose WIAC Match at Eau Claire
Sept. 22, 2001
UW-River Falls' volleyball squad dropped a 3-0 (30-28,
30-24, 30-28) decision to WIAC rival UW-Eau Claire Wednesday night on
the Blugolds' home court.
With the loss, their first in league play this season, the Falcons dropped
to 8-8 on the year and 2-1 in WIAC action. UW-EC improved to 14-3, 1-1.
UW-RF outkilled UW-EC 55 to 48, but the Blugolds held a .217 to .188 advantage
in attack percentage.
Sophomores Krystle Brune and Melissa Tvrdik tied for team-high kill honors
for the Falcons with 13 apiece, sophomore Amy Lundberg totaled 27 assists,
sophomore Sarah Halverson provided the team's lone ace and junior Karen
ZumMallen recorded a team-best 12 digs.
Brooke Wozniak paced UW-EC with 14 kills, and teammate Andrea Hemple dished
out 42 assists.
The Falcons will return to action Friday, when they begin play at the
two-day UW-Whitewater Tourney.
Volleyball Team Tops Stevens Point
Sept. 22, 2001
The Falcon volleyball team won three straight games to
beat Stevens Point at the Karges Center Saturday afternoon.
Melissa Tvrdik led the Falcons with 11 kills. Michelle Mattson added 10
while Krystle Brune and Karen ZumMallen each had nine in a balanced attack.
Both Amy Lundberg and Molly Schock had 20 assists. Sara Halverson had
five aces. Mattson had 15 digs and ZumMallen 12. Brune had two blocks
and two block assists while Becky Hylland had one block and three block
assists.
The Falcons, now 8-7 overall and 2-0 in the WIAC, will
next play at Eau Claire on Wednesday with action starting at 7 p.m.
Volleyball Stings UW-Superior In WIAC opener
Sept. 19, 2001
UW-River Falls (7-7, 1-0) defeated UW-Superior (4-6, 0-1)
3-1 (30-20, 30-27, 28-30, 30-18) Wednesday evening in Superior to kick
of its WIAC schedule with a victory.
The victory terminated a four-match Falcon losing streak.
Sophomore Krystle Brune tallied 19 kills to pace the Falcons in that department,
while senior Michelle Mattson and sophomore Melissa Tvrdik each added
11. Junior Karen ZumMallen pitched in nine.
Sophomore Amy Lundberg dished out a team-high 30 assists and sophomore
Molly Schock, who also recorded three service aces, added 27. Mattson
and Schock led UW-RF in digs with 22 and 16, respectively.
UW-RF will return to action Saturday, when it hosts UW-Stevens Point (2-4,
0-1) in a WIAC match slated to begin at 2 p.m. in Karges Center
Falcon Volleyball Goes Winless At Central Invite

UW-River Falls went 0-2 on day two of the Central College
(Iowa) Invitational to culminate the event with an 0-4 mark and drop its
season record to 6-7.
UW-RF, the lone squad in the five-team tourney to go winless, fell 3-2
(29-31, 30-14, 30-23, 24-30, 15-10) to Bethel (Minn.) (8-5), and was swept
3-0 (30-21, 30-17, 32-30) by three-time defending NCAA Division III national
champion Central (7-2), which finished second in the tournament to Elmhurst.
Sophomore Molly Schock, who tallied 22 kills against Bethel, was the lone
Falcon to earn all-tournament team honors.
UW-RF will return to action Wednesday, when it travels to UW-Superior
for a WIAC contest slated to begin at 7 p.m.
Falcon Volleyball Starts Central Invite 0-2
Sept. 14, 2001
UW-River Falls dropped a pair of matches in
straight games Friday on opening day of the Central College Invitational,
held in Pella, Iowa, to fall to 6-5 on the year.
The Falcons suffered a 3-0 (30-23, 30-25, 30-25) setback to Elmhurst (9-0
season record), and dropped a 3-0 (30-24, 32-30, 30-18) decision to Nebraska
Wesleyan (7-4).
Against Nebraska Wesleyan, junior Karen ZumMallen tallied 10 kills, sophomore
Melissa Tvrdik added eight kills, sophomore Molly Schock dished out 19
assists, sophomore Amy Lundberg totaled16 assists and senior Becky Hylland
collected four blocks.
No UW-RF statistics were available for the contest vs. Elmhurst at the
time of this posting.
The Falcons will resume play Saturday when the Central Invite continues.
Falcons Beat Macalester, 3-0

The Falcons beat Macalester, 3-0, Wednesday night in St.
Paul.
The Falcons won, 30-15, 30-13, 30-18 to raise their record
to 4-1 on the season.
Melissa Tvrdik led the Falcons wtih 10 kills and she had
a .471 hitting percentage. She had five block assists. Sara McKee added
six kills and five block assists. Molly Schock had a team-high nine digs
and she added 13 assists. Amy Lundberg led the team with 17 assists and
she had eight digs. Krystel Brune had nine kills. Michelle Mattson and
Sarah Halverson each had two aces. Karen ZumMallen had six kills, seven
digs and two block assists.
This weekend the Falcons will compete in the UW-Platteville Tournament.
Falcons Split in Saturday's Tournament Action

The Falcons split in two matches on Saturday
in the UWRF Tournament held at the Karges Center.
In the team's first match of the day the Falcons beat Upper Iowa in four
games, 30-13, 30-18, 29-31 and 30-13. The Falcons only loss came in the
final match of the day to St. Olaf, three games to none. The Oles won,
30-17, 30-22 and 30-25.
The Falcons, now 3-1 overall, will play at Macalester on Wednesday with
action starting at 7 p.m.
Falcons Open Season With Two Wins
Aug. 31, 2001
The Falcons opened the season with two wins
in the UWRF Tournament Friday at the Karges Center.
The Falcons beat Luther in their first match, 30-25, 27-30,
30-23 and 30-22. UWRF came back to beat Marian in four games in their
second match, 30-26, 28-30, 30-22 and 30-19.
Saturday the Falcons play two more matches in the tourney.
They face Upper Iowa at 11:30 a.m. and St. Olaf at 3:30 p.m. at the Karges
Center.
Volleyball Team Ranked 8th in AVCA Poll
Aug. 23, 2001
The Falcon volleyball team is ranked eighth in the AVCA Div. III Preseason
Coaches poll released today.
The Falcons, which finished 27-11 last year, picked up 170 votes. UW-Whitewater
is ranked second in the poll and UW-Oshkosh is 15th.
UWRF opens its season on Friday, Aug. 31 when they host the first of
a two-day tournament at the Karges Center. Action starts at 2 p.m. Saturday's
play begins at 9:30 a.m. Joining the Falcons will be UW-Stout, Luther,
Marian, St. Olaf, Upper Iowa and Augsburg. St. Olaf was ranked 16th in
