Falcons Lose to Elmhurst at NCAA Tourney

The Falcons dropped a tough three-games-to-two decision to Elmhurst in the NCAA Midwest Regional Friday at Whitewater.

The Falcons won the first and third games, 16-14, 15-13. Elmhurst won the second, fourth and deciding fifth games, 15-13, 15-9, 15-13. The Falcons end their season 27-11 overall.

Melissa Mattson led the Falcons with 22 kills and four block assists. Joy Nicholson added 18 kills and a team-high 24 digs. Krystle Brune had 14 kills, six aces and 12 digs. Holly Olson led the team with 61 assists and 21 digs.




Falcons Make NCAA Div. III Tourney

Nov. 7, 2000

The Falcons have earned an at-large berth to the NCAA Div. III National Tournament.

UWRF will join five other teams at UW-Whitewater for matches this weekend. The Falcons got the second seed in the Midwest Regional. UW-Whitewater is the No. 1 seed. Elmhurst College is the No. 3 seed, DePauw University is No. 4, Lake Forest College is No. 5 and Hope College is No. 6.

There will be two matches on Thursday. Hope will face DePauw and Elmhurst will meet Lake Forest. The Falcons will play the winner of the Elmhurst-Lake Forest match at 5 p.m. and Whitewater will meet the winner of the Hope-DePauw match at 7 p.m. on Friday. The semifinal winners will meet on Saturday at 7 p.m. for the Regional Championship. The winner of the Midwest Regional will face the winner of the West Regional on Nov. 18 at a site to be determined.

The Falcons enter the tourney with a 27-10 overall record. It is the fifth time in the past six years the Falcons, coached by Patti Ford, has reached the National Tourney, and the sixth time overall that the Falcons have been selected for the national event.

The Falcons beat Lake Forest earlier this year in three games. The Falcons are 0-2 against Whitewater this year. The Falcons have not played any of the other teams in the Regional.

 



Falcons Lose to Whitewater in WIAC Finals

Nov. 4, 2000

The Falcons lost to Whitewater, three games to one, in the WIAC Finals held Saturday at UW-Whtiewater.

The Warhawns won the first game, 15-13 and the Falcons won the second game by the same score. Whitewater won the last two games, 15-8 and 15-9.

Joy Nicholson led the Falcons with 19 kills and 27 digs. Melissa Mattson and Sara McKee had 11 digs and Krystle Brune added 10. Holly Olson finished with 47 assists and 25 digs.

The Falcons will await word to see if they get a berth into the NCAA Div. III tournament.


Falcons Beat Oshkosh in WIAC Semifinals

Nov. 3, 2000

The Falcons beat Oshkosh, three games to two on Friday night, to advance to the finals of the WIAC Tournament being played at UW-Whitewater.

The Falcons won the first game 15-13 and Oshkosh took the second game, 15-13. The Falcons won game three 15-6 and the Titans won game four, 15-4. The Falcons won the final game, 15-8.

Melissa Mattson led the Falcons with 26 kills. She had one solo and three block assists. Krystle Brune added 13 kills, three aces and 13 digs. Joy Nicholson had a team-high 17 digs and added six kills. Leigh Saxton had 16 digs while Holly Olson led the team with 52 assists.

The Falcons will play the winner of the Whitewater-Platteville match for the WIAC playoff title on Saturday at Whitewater.



Falcons Top Bethel, Stout

Oct. 28, 2000


The Falcons won two more matches in their own Trick or Treat Tournament held Saturday at Karges Center. The Falcons finished 4-0 at the two-day event.

The Falcons beat Bethel 15-6, 15-12, 15-3 and Stout 15-3, 15-8, 15-3 to raise their record to 25-9 for the season.

In the win over Bethel Melissa Mattson and Joy Nicholson both had 12 kills. Krystle Brune added nine kills and led the team with four aces. Holly Olson lead the team witih 37 assists. Andrea Ellsworth had 16 digs, Nicholson 12 and Brune 10.

Nicholson led the Falcons with 21 kills against Stout. She also led the team with 17 digs and two two aces. Brune finished with 16 kills, three block assists and 15 digs. Mattson had 13 kills and three block assists.Olson led the team withi 56 assists and three aces.

Mattson, Brune and Olson were all named to the All-Tournament team.

The Falcons will host Eau Claire in the first-round of the WIAC playoffs on Tuesday at the Karges Center. Action starts at 7 p.m.




Falcons Win Twice in UWRF Tourney

Oct. 27, 2000



The Falcons won both their matches in their own Trick or Treat Classic held Friday at the Kartes Center.

The Falcons opened with a 15-4, 15-7, 15-11 win over Concordia-Moorhead. Later the Falcons took a 1-3, 15-8, 15-12 win over Hamline.

Against C-M Melissa Mattson led the Falcons with 19 kills. Krystle Brune added 12 kills and Joy Nicholson 10. Leigh Saxton led the team with 15 digs and three aces. Nicholson had 12 digs. Holly Olson finished with 46 assists and two aces.

The Falcons play Bethel at noon and Stout at 2 p.m. in the second day of the tourney at the Karges Center.




Falcons Lose at Whitewater

Oct. 21, 2000

The Falcons lost their first WIAC match in two years at UW-Whitewater Saturday afternoon.

Whitewater took the match in three games winning 15-7, 15-12, 15-6.

The Falcons, now 22-9 overall and 7-1 in the WIAC, were led by Melissa Mattson who had 17 kills and two block assists. Joy Nicholson added 14 kills, nine digs, one solo block and one block assist. Krystle Brune had 11 kills, seven digs and two block assists. Holly Olson finished with 40 assists, two aces and 13 digs. Leigh Saxton led the team with 14 digs.

The Falcons next host their own tourney Friday and Saturday at the Karges Center. Other teams competing include Eau Claire, Stout, Concordia-Moorhead, Bethel and Hamline.

Falcons Finish 3-1 at Benedictine Tourney

Oct. 15, 2000

The Falcons finished with a 3-1 record at the Benedictine Tournament held Friday and Saturday.

Friday the Falcons beat North Central, 11-15, 15-11, 15-5, 15-12 to open the tourney and then topped Loras, 15-12, 15-8, 15-9. Saturday the Falcons opened with a win over Cal Poly Pomona Pitzer, 10-15, 15-6, 15-3, 15-10. The Falcons only loss was to Washington University in five games, 15-6, 12-15, 6-15, 15-2, 18-16.

Melissa Mattson led the Falcons in the four matches averaging 3.61 kills a game and a .341 hitting percentage. She had 16 blocks. Her 76 kills over the weekend gives her 1,374 in her career and sets a Falcon career kill record. Anna Schmidt (1993-96) held the record with 1,359.

Setter Holly Olson finished with 204 assists during the weekend and now is the second Falcon to reach the 5,000 career assist mark. She now has 5,226 career kills. She needs just 15 assists to set the career assist record at UWRF. Amy Holm (1993-96) holds that mark with 5,240.

The Falcons play two important WIAC matches this weekend. Friday they are at UW-Oshkosh for a 7 p.m. match and Saturday they go to UW-Whtiewater for a 1 p.m. match.




Falcons Win at Stout

Oct. 11, 2000

It took five games but the Falcons beat UW-Stout in a WIAC match in Menomonie Wednesday night.

Stout won the first game, 15-7 but the Falcons took the next two, 15-12, 15-9. UWS then took a 15-10 win to send the match into rally scoring in the fifth game. The Falcons won that, and the match, 15-10.

Melissa Mattson led the Falcons with 22 kills and she added three block assists. Joy Nicholson added 18 kills, a team-high 19 digs and two block assists. Holly Olson led the team with 47 assists, three aces and 11 digs. Krystle Brune had eight kills and 13 digs.

The Falcons, now 6-0 in the WIAC and 17-7 overall, compete in the Benedictine Tournament this weekend.





Falcons Beat UW-La Crosse

Oct. 7, 2000

The Falcons upped their WIAC record to 5-0 and their overall record to 16-7 with a win over UW-La Crosse Saturday afternoon at the Karges Center.

The Falcons won in three games, 15-1, 15-11, 15-9.

Joy Nicholson led the Falcons with 16 kills and a .448 hitting percentage. She had 12 digs and three aves. Krystle Brune finished with 15 kills, five aces and nine digs. Holly Olson had 36 assists and six digs.

The Falcons are in action again Wednesday with a WIAC match at UW-Stout. Action starts at 7 p.m.






Falcons Top Pioneers

Oct. 6, 2000

The Falcons won for the fourth time in WIAC play topping UW-Platteville Friday night at the Karges Center.

UWRF won the match three games to two. Platteville won the first game 15-8. UWRF won the next two 15-6, 15-4. UWP came back to take a 15-4 win in the fourth game. The Falcons won the final game 15-10 in rally scoring.

Melissa Mattson led the Falcons with 24 kills and a .422 hitting percentage. Joy Nicholson finished with 14 kills and a team-high 25 digs. Krystle Brune added 14 kills and 11 digs. Holly Olson led the team with 52 assists and 18 digs. Leigh Saxton had 15 digs and four assists.

Saturday the Falcons host UW-La Crosse in a WIAC match at the Karges Center with action starting at 2 p.m.






Falcons Place Second at UWEC Tourney

Sept. 30, 2000

The Falcons placed second at the Eau Claire Tourney held Saturday.

In the team's first match of the day the Falcons beat Superior, 15-5, 15-5, 15-6. The Falcons finished 3-0 in pool play and went on to the championship match against Eau Claire.

In the title match the Blugolds took a three games to one win. UWEC won the first game, 15-10 and the Falcons the second, 17-15. But UWEC took the next two games, 15-13 and 15-9.

Melissa Mattson, Joy Nicholson and Holly Olson were all named to the All-Tournament team.

The Falcons, now 14-7 overall and 3-0 in the WIAC, host Platteville in a WIAC match on Friday at the Karges Center. On Saturday the Falcons host La Crosse in another WIAC match, starting at 2 p.m.




Falcons Win Twice at UWEC Tourney

Sept. 29, 2000

The Falcons picked up two more wins Friday at the first day of the Lisa Siegenthaler Memorial Tourney being played at UW-Eau Claire.

The Falcons beat Stout in three games, 15-9, 15-7, 15-5 and Northland in three games, 15-3, 15-2, 15-1.

Against Stout Joy Nicholson and Krystle Brune each had 12 kills. Holly Olson had 39 assists. Nicholson led the Falcons with 21 digs and Leigh Saxton had 12. Andrea Ellsworth led the team with five aces.

Against Northland Melissa Mattson and Melissa Tvrdik led the Falcons with five kills each. Olson had 12 assists. Molly Schock, who was the only Falcon to play in all three games, led the team with four aces.

On Saturday the Falcons face Superior at 9:30 a.m. They will then play at least one and maybe two more matches at 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.



Falcons Take Win Over Eau Claire

Sept. 27, 2000

The Falcons improved their record to 11-6 overall and 3-0 in the WIAC with a gruelling five-game win over UW-Eau Claire Wednesday night at the Karges Center.

The Falcons won the first two games, 15-11 and 16-14. But UWEC came back to dominate the next two, 15-3 and 15-5. In the deciding final game the Falcons rallied to win 15-9.

Melissa Mattson and Joy Nicholson each had 21 kills to lead the Falcons. Krystel Brune added 11 kills. Mattson hit .375. Holly Olson had 61 assists and two aces while Karen ZumMallen had three aces and 16 digs. Nicholson led the Falcons with 23 digs, one solo block and five block assists. Olson added 19 digs and Mattson had two solo blocks and four block assists.

This weekend the Falcons travel to Eau Claire to compete in the Blugold Invitational. The Falcons play Stout at 6 p.m. and Northland at 8 p.m. On Saturday the Falcons face Superior at 9:30 a.m. They will then play at least oner and maybe two more matches at 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.




Falcons Win WIAC Match at Stevens Point

Sept. 23, 2000

The Falcons won for the second time in WIAC play, beating UW-Stevens Point three games to none Saturday in Stevens Point.

The Falcons won 15-10, 15-8, 15-10 to raise their overall record to 10-6 and they are 2-0 in the WIAC.

Joy Nicholson led the Falcons with 17 kills and a .324 hitting percentage. Melissa Mattson finished with 12 kills and a .348 percentage. Holly Olson led the team with 10 digs and 39 assists. Leigh Saxton added nine digs while Nicholson, Karen ZumMallen and Sara McKee each had eight. ZumMallen added two aces.

Wednesday the Falcons host UW-Eau Claire in a WIAC match that starts at 7 p.m. at the Karges Center.



Falcons Beat Macalester

Sept. 22, 2000

The Falcons improved their overall record to 9-6 with a three games to one win over Macalester Friday night at the Karges Center.

The Falcons won the first two games, 15-13 and 15-2. The Scots came back to take the third game, 16-14. But the Falcons rebounded and won the fouth game, 15-10.

Melissa Mattson led the Falcons with 22 kills and a .529 hitting percentage. Joy Nicholson added 18 kills and led the Falcons with 29 digs. Krystle Brune finished with 15 kills. Holly Olson had 63 assists and 13 digs. Karen ZumMallen finished with eight kills nad 16 digs.

Saturday the Falcons, 1-0 in the WIAC, travel to UW-Stevens Point for a conference match against the Pointers that starts at 1:30 p.m.



Falcons Beat UWS in WIAC Play
Sept. 20, 2000

The Falcons opened their WIAC season with a win over UW-Superior in three games Wednesday night at the Karges Center.

The Falcons won 15-8, 15-1, 15-7 and improved their overall record to 8-6.

Friday the Falcons will host Macalester College at 7:30 p.m. at the Karges Center. Saturday the Falcons travel to UW-Stevens Point for another WIAC match.










Falcons Win Twice at Washington Tourney
Sept. 17, 2000


The Falcons rebounded from two losses on Friday to win both matches played on Saturday at the Washington Tourney.

The Falcons blitzed St. Francis in their first match in three games. The Falcons won 15-9, 15-1, 15-10. The Falcons then beat No. 4 ranked Washington University three games to one. The Falcons won 15-13, 5-15, 15-9, 15-11. The Falcons placed second in the tourney with a 2-2 record.

Middle hitter Melissa Mattson and outside hitter Joy Nicholson were both named to the All-Tournament team.

Wednesday the Falcons open WIAC play when they host UW-Superior at the Karges Center. Action starts at 7 p.m.



Falcons Beaten Twice at Washington Tourney
Sept. 15, 2000


The Falcons were defeated twice in the first day of the Washington Tourney held Friday.

Ohio Northern University beat the Falcons in the first match of the day. ONU won 15-12, 7-15, 5-15, 15-10, 15-9.

The Falcons were defeated in their second match of the night by Central College. The score of those games were, 15-8, 15-3, 15-9.

The Falcons will play again Saturday at the Washington Tourney.







Falcons Split at Illinois Wesleyan
Sept. 9, 2000

The Falcons split two matches in the second day of the Illinois Wesleyan Tourney held Saturday.

Illinois Wesleyan topped the Falcons in the first match of the day. IWU won, 15-9, 15-13 and 15-3. The Falcons rebounded for a win in their second match beating Lake Forest, 15-10, 15-12, 15-3.

The Falcons, now 5-4 overall, return to action this weekend at the Washington, Mo., University Tourney.



Falcons Win Twice at Illinois Wesleyan
Sept. 8, 2000

The Falcons won both matches played Friday at the Illinois Wesleyan Tourney.

The Falcons, now 4-3 overall, beat Illinois College 15-8, 15-8, 15-4 to open the tourney. They came back later to beat Benedictine 17-15, 15-10, 15-11.

Saturday the Falcons will play Illinois Wesleyan at 11 a.m. and Lake Forest at 1 p.m. Illinois Wesleyan and Lake Forest won their first two matches setting up the Falcons to play in the championship pool of the tourney.

 

 

 




Falcons Top St. Thomas
Sept. 6, 2000

The Falcons opened their home season with a convincing win over St. Thomas University Wednesday night at the Karges Center.

The Falcons won the first two games, 15-1 and 15-6. St. Thomas took the third game, 15-12. But the Falcons responded, much to the delight of the 100 fans in attendance, to win the fourth game, and the match, 15-7.

Joy Nicholson led the Falcons with 17 kills and had a .389 hitting percentage. She had 13 digs, two solo blocks and one block assist. Melissa Mattson had 16 kills and an outstanding .481 hitting percentage. She had two solo blocks and two block assists. Krystle Brune added 13 kills and nine digs. Holly Olson led the offense with 52 assists. Andrea Ellsworth led the defense with 14 digs.

This weekend the Falcons, now 2-3 overall, play at the Illinois Wesleyan Tourney. Friday they face Illinois College at 6 p.m. and Benedictine at 8 p.m. Saturday the Falcons play two more matches dending on how they finished in their first two matches.

 

Falcons Lose to Central, Washington
The Falcons lost two matches at the Central, Iowa Tourney on Saturday to finish with a 1-3 record in the two-day event.

The Falcons lost to the AVCA's No. 1 ranked team, Central, in three games, 15-7, 15-10, 15-9. Melissa Mattson led the Falcons with 14 kills and Holly Olson had 30 assists. Karen ZumMallen led the team with seven digs.

The Falcons dropped a five-game match to the nation's No. 4 ranked team, Washington, Mo. The Falcons won the first game, 18-16 and the fourth game, 15-10. But Washington won 15-12, 15-8 and 15-12 in the deciding match. Krystle Brune led the Falcons with 24 kills and Olson had 52 assists. Joy Nicholson had 18 digs to lead the Falcons.

Brune was named to the seven-person All-Tournament team.

Wednesday the Falcons will host St. Thomas at 7:30 p.m. at the Karges Center.

Falcons Open With Split

The Falcons, ranked No. 5 in the AVCA pre-season poll, opened their season spliting two matches at the Central, Iowa Tourney on Friday.

The Falcons beat Gustavus Adolphus in four games to start the season. GA won the first game, 16-14, but the Falcons bounced back to win the next three, 15-6, 15-6, 15-6.

The Falcons then dropped a three-game match to St. Olaf. The Oles won, 15-12, 15-8, 15-8. Melissa Mattson had 18 kills, Holly Olson had 45 assists and Joy Nicholson added 10 digs.

Saturday the Falcons face two other ranked teams. The Falcons face the host school, Central, which is ranked No. 1 in the AVCA poll. The Falcons also face Washington, Mo., University which is ranked No. 4 in the poll.
