Falcon Volleyball Player of the Week

Oct. 30, 2000

Outside hitter Melissa Mattson (Sr., Alden, Minn. Alden-Conger HS) helped the Falcons to four wins. She finished with 59 kills and a .395 hitting percentage. She had 17 digs, two solo blocks and six block assists. She was named to the All-Tournament team.

 

 

 

 

 

Oct. 23, 2000

Middle hitter Melissa Mattson (Sr., Alden, Minn. Alden-Conger HS) had two strong WIAC matches for the Falcons against Oshkosh and Whitewater. Mattson had 30 kills in the two matches and a .333 hitting percentage. She had six digs and five block assists. "She continues to carry us. Really, in times where we need points, she's scoring them for us," said Coach Patti Ford. "She's kind of just keeping us right there in the hunt of everything."

 

 

 

Oct. 16, 2000

Melissa Mattson (Sr., Alden, Minn. Alden-Conger HS) helped the Falcons to a 4-1 record during the week and set a career record for kills at UWRF. For the week Mattson had 76 kills and a .341 hitting percentage. She had five solo and 12 block assists and 10 digs. She now holds the UWRF career kill record with 1,374, breaking the record held by Anna Schmidt (1993-96) of 1,359. "She just contributes as much as she can to the cause," Coach Patti Ford said. "It's a tribute to her, with all that she's done, she continues to reach milestones. Reaching the record is a good thing. She's been in the program, taken it with a day-by-day approach, and she's a real good model for everything (she does) out there."

 

 

Oct. 9, 2000

Melissa Mattson (Sr., Alden, Minn. Alden-Conger HS) helped the Falcons to two WIAC wins last week over Platteville and La Crosse. Against Platteville she led the team with 24 kills and a .422 hitting percentage. In the two matches she had 31 kills and a .369 hitting percentage. She had three digs, one solo block and two block assists. "Her contributions are significant," head coach Patti Ford said. "She really is a steady performer. In big matches, she comes up with big numbers."

 

 

 

 

Oct. 2, 2000

Setter Holly Olson (Sr., Woodbury, Minn.) led the Falcons to a 4-1 record during the week. The Falcons beat Eau Claire in a WIAC match and then placed second at the Eau Claire Tourney, losing to the Blugolds in the title match. Olson had eight kills and a .291 hitting percentage. She averaged 12.7 assists a game. She finished with seven aces, 50 digs and three block assists. She was named to the Eau Claire All-Tourney team along with teammates Joy Nicholson and Melissa Mattson. "Holly spread the ball out, and we got productivity out of just about every one of our hitters, which we really haven't seen all year," Coach Patti Ford said. "We need to continue to do that, because if we can show opponents thast we have other hitters, which Holly is doing, we're going to continue to push it to the limits."

 

Sept. 25, 2000

Outside hitter Joy Nicholson (Jr., River Falls, Wis.) helped lead the Falcons to a 3-0 record in the week, including two WIAC wins. In 10 games she had 43 kills and hit .329. She had two aces, 51 digs, two solo blocks and five block assists. "Joy's defense is awesome and her hitting is really coming around," coach Patti Ford said. "I think she's really kind of the glue that's keeping things together."

 

 

 

 

Sept. 18, 2000

Setter Holly Olson (Sr., Woodbury, Minn.) helped the Falcons to a 2-2 record last week. Once again the Falcons faced some top teams including Ohio Northern (9-1 record), Central (6-1) and Washington (9-3). Olson led the Falcons with 189 assists, a 12.6 per game average. She also had eight kills, four aces and 40 digs. "Holly's performance was steady and she distributed the ball very well, especially in our win over No. 4 ranked Washington," coach Patti Ford said.

 

 

Sept. 11, 2000

Outside hitter Joy Nicholson (Jr., River Falls, Wis.) helped lead the Falcons to a 4-1 record last week. In the five matches she played 16 games, had 64 kills, a 4.00 per game average and a .233 hitting percentage. She had 71 digs, a 4.43 average per game, plus six solo blocks and seven block assists. "Joy's overall game - serving passing, blocking, digging - they were all strengths," coach Patti Ford said. "She's really mastered the intangibles of the game. She's an offensive threat."




 

 

Sept. 4, 2000

Middle hitter Melissa Mattson (Sr., Alden, Minn., Alden-Conger H.S.) had four excellent matches at the Central, Iowa Tourney last weekend. She finished with 67 kills, a 4.46 per game average, and a .361 hitting percentage. She also had six solo and 13 block assists. Against Central, Iowa, a team that was ranked No. 1 in the AVCA poll going into the weekend, Mattson had 15 kills and no errors for a .600 hitting percentage. Against Wasdhington, Mo., University, a team that was ranked No. 4 in the nation, she finished with 22 kills and a .326 hitting percentage. "Despite the team finishing with a 1-3 record against some of the nation's top teams, Melissa was a standout," coach Patti Ford said.
