Falcon Tennis Players of the Week
|
Oct. 8, 2001 Singles: Meghann Mulligan (Sr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) finished with
a 1-1 record at No. 2 singles. She won over a Wiinona opponent, 10-4 and
lost to an Eau Claire opponent, 6-3, 6-1. "Meghann has gained a lot
of confidence this year and has compiled a 7-3 record in singles play.
Besides a leader on the court by setting a good work example, she is co-captain
of the team, and has kept the team unified by planning a lot of team building
social events," coach Lee Lueck said.
Oct. 1, 2001 Singles: No. 2 player Jordan Anderson (So., Winona, Minn.)
came out with an 11-9 win over her St. Catherine opponent last week. She
trailed 8-5 at one point, but came back for the win. "Jordon plays
very aggressive and will not give into defeat, regardless of the score,"
Coach Lee Lueck said. "Jordon has never learned how to lose and so
the thought doesn't enter her mind. Her game also continues to improve
as she implements the tactics/strategies we talk about and work on in
practice." Doubles: The No. 2 team of Jordan Anderson and Meredith Verberne (So., Brookfield, Wis. Central HS) teamed up to get a 9-7 win against St. Catherine. "It was a close match, but they came through to win an important point," Coach Lee Lueck said.
Sept. 24, 2001 Singles: Meredith Verberne (So., Brookfield, Wis) won both singles matches last week to help the Falcons defeat Oshkosh (5-4) and Stevens Point (9-0). On Saturday the Falcons trailed Oshkosh (4-3) with two matches left. Verberne won 6-4, 6-4 helping make the final team score 5-4. "She had a lot of pressure on her and came through with the win," coach Lee Lueck said.
Sept. 17, 2001 Singles: No. 3 player Jordan Anderson (So., Winona, Minn.) had two good matches for the Falcons. Even though she lost at both Ripon and Whitewater she begin to demonstrate skills she will need to defeat players of that same ability later this season, according to coach Lee Leuck. Last season Anderson, who played just singles in high school, was basically a baseline player. But, with constant prodding by the coach and her own personal determination she has worked on both her transition game and net game. Lueck was impressed to see her hit aggressive approach shot serves, return of serves and then follow them to the net for the volley or overhead. "I'm proud of Jordan as she works on becoming a more complete tennis player," said Lueck.
Sept. 10, 2001 Singles: Mary Metzer (Jr., Coleraine, Minn. Greenway HS) won all three singles matches she played last week to help the Falcons open the season with a 3-0 record. The Falcons beat St. Norbert (5-4), Lawrence (9-0) and Lakeland (9-0). Against St. Norbert, all of the matches were done with the team scored tied 4-4. Metzer came through with a 6-3, 7-5 win to help the Falcons to the win. "There were other key wins in the match, but with everyone watching, Mary came through for us with a big win," coach Lee Lueck said. |
