Falcons Open Season With Three Wins

Sept. 10, 2001

The Falcon women's tennis team opened its 2001 season winning all three matches played last weekend on an eastern Wisconsin road trip.

The Falcons won at St. Norbert on Friday, 5-4, and came back Saturday to take a pair of 9-0 wins over Lawrence and Lakeland.

The match against St. Norbert went down to the wire. UWRF got off to an early 4-1 lead. But with four matches still playing at one time, and UWRF only needing one more point for the victory, it looked like a Falcon win was close. However, the next three victories all belonged to St. Norbert.

With just the No. 5 singles players left playing, all eyes were focused on Falcon junior Mary Metzer. She had won the first set 6-3, but the second set was close and ended up in a tiebreaker, with Metzer winning 7-5. That secured the 5-4 victory for the Falcons and their first victory of season.

Also winning for the Falcons against St. Norbert were No. 2 Meghann Mulligan (6-3, 6-0), No. 4 Amanda Gray (6-1, 6-4), the No. 1 doubles team of Lindsey Oberg and Gray (10-1) and the No. 2 team of Mulligan and Jordan Anderson (10-2).
