Falcons Lose to UWSP in WIAC Semifinals

Nov. 8, 2002

The Falcons lost a 4-1 decision to UW-Stevens Point in the semifinals of the WIAC playoffs Friday afternoon played in Stevens Point.

The game was tied, 1-1 at halftime, but the Pointers scored three unanswered second half goals to get the win and improve their overall record to 16-0-2.

UWRF's Amy Gilfillan gave the Falcons a 1-0 lead at 2:45 of the first half with a breakaway goal. Molly McClanahan got the assist on Gilfillan's 36th goal of the season. UWSP tied the game at 37:45 when Kelly Fink scored off a rebound from a shot by Melissa Becker.

UWSP got the eventual game winner at 65:13 when Fink scored into an open net when the Falcons misplayed the ball. UWSP's Jenny Bruse scored on a header at 74:38 with Emma-Klara Porter getting the assist. With the Falcons pushing ahead in an effort to score, WWSP's Fink scored her third of the game, unassisted, at 88:54.

UWRF goalie Apryl Jennrich made seven saves and UWSP's Kortney Krill (1) and Melissa Meister (3) combined for four saves. UWSP was credited with 26 shots and UWRF eight.

The Falcons end their season with a 13-5-2 record. The 13 wins is a school record. UWSP advances to the championshp game against the winner of the Eau Claire-Oshkosh match.

Falcons Advance to Second Round, Defeat Whitewater 2-1

Nov. 5, 2002

The Falcons will advance to the second round of the WIAC playoffs after a 2-1 victory over UW-Whitewater Tuesday afternoon.

Amy Gilfillan, who had six shots on goal, scored both the Falcon goals. Gilfillan scored in the sixth minute of the game, with Erin Pinewski on the assist. Stephanie Thompson scored Whitewater's only goal in the 33rd minute. Gilfillan scored again in the 71st minute with Caroline Benson on the assist.

UW-RF goaltender Apryl Jennrich had 17 saves, allowing only one goal in 90 minutes of play. Whitewater goaltender Jamie Corollo had seven saves and allowed two goals.

The Falcons will next play in the WIAC Tournament semifinals on Friday at 11 a.m. at UW-Stevens Point. UWSP will host the semifinals and finals after winning the WIAC regular season championship. Oshkosh plays Eau Claire in the other semifinal on Friday. The winners will play for the WIAC playoff title on Saturday at 1 p.m.

 

Falcons Win at UMC as Gilfillan Sets Record

Nov. 2, 2002

The Falcons took a 4-1 win at UM-Crookston Saturday afternoon and UWRF's Amy Gilfillan scored three goals to lead the way.

The three goals gives Gilfillan 33 for the year which sets a UWRF and WIAC record for goals in a season.

Gilfillan scored twice in the first half. She scored on a breakaway with an assist to Erin Pinewski and later with an assist to Sarah Hoffmann. UMC scored later in the half to make it a 2-1 game at the break. Gilfillan scored her third goal of the game in the second half with Emily Rodgers assisting. Later Rodgers netted the Falcons final goal.

UWRF goalies Apryl Jennrich (5) and Belinda Miller (2) combined for seven saves.

Tuesday the Falcons, now 12-4-2 overall, host UW-Whitewater in the first round of the WIAC playoffs. Action starts at 3 p.m. at Ramer Field.

Falcons Fall to Carleton

Oct. 24, 2002

The Falcons fell one goal short in the 3-2 loss to Carleton College Thursday night.

Carleton went ahead 1-0 in the third minute of the game when Maggie Fernandez scored. UW-RF's Amy Gilfillan answered with a goal in the 11th minute. Carleton scored the next two goals in the 12th and 34th minutes of the game. UW-RF's Brandi Golden scored in the 56th minute. Gilfillan had the Falcons only assist.

UW-RF goalie Apryl Jennrich had 13 saves.

The Falcons see action next at St. Catherine's Saturday. Action begins at 1 p.m.

 

Falcons Beat Ripon

Oct. 20, 2002

The Falcons defeated Ripon 7-0 on Sunday afternoon at Ramer Field.

UWRF opened the scoring in the first minute of the game when Amy Gilfillan scored with an assist to Amy Soud. Sarah Hoffman scored the second goal of the game at the 12 minute mark with a pass from Gilfillan. Gillfillan scored three more goals after that. Sarah Hoffman had one more goal, and Sonja Dudley scored in the 87th minute. Erin Pinewski had two assists. Other Falcon assists came from Sarah Johnson and Gina Hawkins.

UWRF goalie Apryl Jennrich made one save and Ripons Amanda Boyle stopped 24 shots.

The Falcons play their next game at Carleton on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.

Falcons Lose to UWSP in Overtime

Oct. 19, 2002

The Falcons lost a 2-1 decision in overtime to UW-Stevens Point Saturday afternoon at Ramer Field.

UWSP opened the scoring in the 16th minute of the game when Andie Oswald scored. THe Falcons tied the game in the 50th minute when Erin Pinewski scored with an assist to Amy Gilfillan. That's how the regulation time ended. UWSP's Kelly Fink scored eight minutes into the first overtime to win the game for the Pointers. Molly Cady assisted.

UWRF goalie Apryl Jennrich made 20 saves and UWSP's Kortney Krill stopped three shots.

The Falcons host Ripon on Sunday at Rmaer Field with action starting at 2 p.m.

Falcons Beat Bethel

Oct. 17, 2002

The Falcons scored a 1-0 victory over Bethel Thursday afternoon.

UW-RF's Amy Gilfillan scored in the 32nd minute of the game.

UW-RF goal tender Apryl Jennrich had four saves, while Bethel's Jennie Pulford had one save and allowed one goal.

The Falcons face Stevens Point at 1 p.m. Saturday at Ramer Field.

 

Falcons Tie at Stout, 2-2

Oct. 11, 2002

The Falcons played to a 2-2 tie in two overtimes Friday night at UW-Stout in a WIAC match.

There was no scoring in the first half. UWRF got on the board first when Amy Gilfillan scored in the 49th minute. Sarah Geiger even the game at 1-1 when she scored in the 60th minute. Eight minutes later Gilfillan scored her second goal of the match, and 22nd of the season, in the 68th minute. Stout's Nellie Sivertsen tied the game with a goal in the 74th minute. In the two overtimes Stout had six shots and UWRF one.

Gilfillan's two goals sets a Falcon record for goals in a single season. The previous record was 20.

Falcon goalie Apryl Jennrich made seven saves and Stout's Melissa Ballweg had two.

The Falcons are undefeated in their last eight games. UWRF is now 8-2-2 overall and 4-2-1 in the WIAC.

The Falcons next place a non-conference match at Bethel on Thursday. Action starts at 3:30 p.m.

Falcons Tie at Augsburg, 1-1

Oct. 9, 2002

The Falcons played to a 1-1 tie in two overtimes Wednesday night at Augsburg College.

After a scoreless first half, UWRF's Amy Gilfillan scored the Falcon goal in the 68th minute with an assist to Emily Rodgers. It was Gilfillan's 20th goal of the year - tying the team's record for most goals in a season. It was Rodgers' eighth assist of the year. But in the 76th minute, AC's Eilidh Reyelts tied the game with a goal. Neither team could score in the two 10-minute overtime periods.

UWRF goalie Apryl Jennrich made nine saves and the Falcons had 12 shots. AC had 19 shots.

The Falcons had their school record six-game winning streak snapped with the tie. But the team is still undefeated in its last seven games. UWRF is now 8-2-1 overall and 4-2 in the WIAC.

The Falcons play at WIAC match at UW-Stout on Friday. Action starts at 7 p.m.

Gilfillan, Rodgers Ranked in NCAA Stats; Team Sets Win Record

Oct. 4, 2002

Forward Amy Gilfillan and midfielder Emily Rodgers are both listed in the Sept. 29 NCAA Div. III women's soccer statistics report.

Gilfillan, a junior, is tied for second in goals scored with 18 (2.0 per game) and is sixth in points with 36 (4.0 per game). Rodgers, a sophomore, is tied for 25th in assists with seven (.78 per game).

With the team's 2-1 win at UW-La Crosse on Wednesday (Oct. 30 the Falcons set a record for most consecutive wins in a season with six. The winning streak started on Sept. 14 at UW-Platteville (3-1) and includes wins over Wisconsin Lutheran (4-1), UW-Superior (11-0), Concordia-St. Paul (5-1), UW-Oshkosh (2-1) and La Crosse.

The Falcons next play at Augsburg on Wednesday (Oct. 9) at 7 p.m.

Falcons defeat La Crosse, 2-1

Oct. 3, 2002

UW-RF's Amy Gilfillan and Sarah Hoffmann produced the two goals for the 2-1 WIAC victory over UW-La Crosse Thursday afternoon in La Crosse.

La Crosse took their only lead when Julie Taylor scored in the 18th minute. Hoffmann scored UW-RF's first goal in the 41st minute and Gilfillan scored in the 69th minute. Brandi Golden assisted on Gilfillan's goal and Gilfillan assisted on Hoffmann's score. UW-RF goalie Apryl Jennrich made seven saves and UW-LC's Jessica Gammey stopped three shots.

The Falcons improved their overall record to 8-2, and 4-2 in the WIAC.

The Falcons are at Augsburg on Oct. 9. Action begins at 7 p.m.

 

Falcons Top Oshkosh, 2-1

Sept. 28, 2002

The Falcons got two goals from Amy Gilfillan and grabbed a 2-1 win over UW-Oshkosh Saturday afternoon at Ramer Field.

Gilfillan scored in the second minute of the game to give UWRF a 1-0 lead and that's how the first half ended. Erin Pinewski got the assist. Gilfillan put the Falcons ahead 2-0 with a goal in the 49th minute with Pinewski assisting again. Just a minute later Oshkosh's Sandie Brink scored to make it a 2-1 game. Falcon goalie Apryl Jennrich made 20 saves. Oshkosh's Christine Barutha stopped eight shots and Kristin Grandberry made two.

The Falcons improved their overall record to 7-2, and 3-2 in the WIAC. Oshkosh is now 2-6-1 overall and 0-3-1 in the WIAC.

The Falcons next play at UW-La Crosse at 4 p.m. on Thursday.

Falcons Beat Concordia

Sept. 25, 2002

The Falcons defeated Concordia 5-1 Wednesday afternoon. Amy Gilfillan scored three goals and Erin Pinewski scored two goals and had two assists.

The Falcons led 2-1 at the half. Gilfillan scored in the 6th and the 10th minute, putting the Falcons up 2-0, before Lyndsey Gages of Concordia scored in the 38th minute. In the second half, Gilfillan scored again in the 55th minute followed by Pinewski's two goals in the 81st and 82nd minutes.

UW-RF golie Apryl Jennrich stopped eight Concordia shots, only allowing one goal. Concordia goalie Kara Gamboni had 14 saves.

The Falcons improved their overall record to 6-2, while remaining 2-2 in the WIAC. The Falcons host UW-Oshkosh on Saturday at Ramer Field. Action starts at 1 p.m.

Falcons Top Superior

Sept. 21, 2002

Amy Gilfillan and Jenn DeMartino each scored three goals to lead the Falcons to an 11-0 win over UW-Superior Saturday afternoon at Ramer Field.

The Falcons led 4-0 at the half. Gilfillan scored twice, in the 20th and 24th minutes. Lisa McGuire scored in the 35th and De Martino in the 43rd. In the second half, Gilfillan scored in the seventh minute, and Emily Rodgers scored twice, in the 19th and in the 20th. Erin Pinewski scored in the 29th minute. De Martino scored twice more, the first on a penalty kick in the 40th minute, and again a minute later. Gina Hawkins finished the scoring in the 44th minute. UWRF goalie Belinda Miller stopped two shots. UWS goalie Erin Johnson made 40 saves.

The Falcons, now 5-2 overall and 2-2 in the WIAC, host Concordia-St. Paul on Wednesday at Ramer Field. Action starts at 4 p.m.

Falcons Win at Wisconsin Lutheran, 4-1

Sept. 15, 2002

Amy Gilfillan scored twice to help lead the Falcons to a 4-1 win at Wisconsin Luther Sunday afternoon.

The Falcons led 2-0 at halftime off of goals by Emily Rodgers at 3:20 and Gilfillan at 22:12. Gilfillan added her second goal at 52:59 of the second half. Erin Pinewski scored the final Falcon goal at 59:47. Brandi Golden assisted on the first and Libby King on the second. WL scored its goal at 89:17. UWRF goalie Apryl Jennrich made six saves and the Falcons had 11 shots on goal.

The Falcons, now 4-2 overall, host UW-Superior in a WIAC match on Saturday at Ramer Field. Action starts at noon.

Falcons Top Platteville 3-1

Sept. 14, 2002

Amy Gilfillan notched two goals for the Falcons in the first two minutes at Platteville Saturday afternoon to propel the Falcons to a 3-1 win.

Gilfillan scored all three for the Falcons, at 1:02, 1:57 and 68:24. The Pioneers responded with a late goal at 83:45 to put themselves on the scoreboard.

The Falcons had 13 shots on goal and made four saves.

The Falcons, now 3-2 overall and 1-2 in the WIAC, play at Wisconsin Lutheran Sunday at 11 a.m.

 

UWEC Tops Falcons, 4-2

Sept. 12, 2002

The Falcon soccer team dropped a 4-2 decision to UW-Eau Claire Thursday afternoon at Ramer Field.

UWEC scored two goals in each half while the Falcons scored once in each 45 minute period. UWRF took a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute when Erin Pinewski scored. UWEC got goals from Jill Cope in the 23rd minute and Kris Underweger in the 41st minute to take a 2-1 lead at the half. Megan Oswall gave UWEC a 3-1 lead in the 68th minute. UWRF made it a game when Molly McClanahan scored just three minutes later. UWEC's Kiley Zellner put the game out of reach with a goal in the 88th minute.

UWRF goalie Apryl Jennrich made 23 saves and UWEC goalie Megan Brady stopped six shots.

The Falcons, now 2-2 overall and 0-2 in the WIAC, play at UW-Platteville at 2 p.m. on Saturday

Gilfillan Scores Three to Lead Falcons at SMU

Sept. 8, 2002

Amy Gilfillan scored three times to lead the Falcon soccer team to a 5-0 win at St. Mary's University Sunday afternoon.

UWRF led 2-0 at the half and added three more in the second half. Gilfillan scored both of UWRF's first hlf goals early - the first at 2:56 and the second at 3:36. Sara Sanfilippo assisted on the first goal and Emily Rodgers on the second. The Falcons struck quickly in the second half to take a 4-0 lead. Lisa McGuire scored at 47:06 with an assist to Erin Pinewski and Gilfillan scored her third at 47:57 unassisted. Libbi King got hte final Falcon goal at 64:01 with Rodgers assisting. Falcon goalie Apryl Jennrich got her first shutout of the season making five saves. UWRF had 15 shots on goal.

The Falcons, now 2-1 overall and 0-1 in the WIAC, host UW-Eau Claire in a WIAC match on Thursday at Ramer Field. Action starts at 4 p.m.

 

Falcons Lose Close One at Whitewater, 1-0

Sept. 7, 2002

The Falcons dropped a close 1-0 decision at UW-Whitewater Saturday afternoon.

UWW scored the only goal of the match in the 86th minute when Wendy Scott scored with an assist to Jamie McLaughlin. Falcon goalie Apryl Jennrich made nine saves and the Falcons had two shots on goal.

The Falcons, now 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the WIAC, play at St. Mary's on Sunday with action starting at 1 p.m.

Soccer Team Wins First Game of The Season

Sept. 4, 2002

The Falcon soccer team defeated Hamline tonight, 5-2, in their season opener.

UWRF held a 4-1 lead after one half. Freshman Libbi King, scored the first goal of the game at 5:47. Amy Gilfillan scored the second Falcon goal at 15:54. Emily Ament of Hamline scored the first Piper goal at 19:54. UWRF's Erin Pinewski answered back with a goal at 22:44. Gilfillan scored her second goal of the game at 43:44. Pinewski scored the final Falcon goal, her second of the game, at 55:20. UWRF goalie Apryl Jennrich made seven saves and the Falcons had 18 shots on goal.

The Falcons open WIAC play on Saturday at UW-Whtiewater. Action starts at 1 p.m.
