Women's Hockey Team Opens This Weekend

Oct. 28, 2002

The Falcon women's hockey coach, Joe Cranston, has high expectations for the 2002-03 season. That season starts this weekend for the Falcons when they host Augsburg College on Friday and Gustavus Adolphus on Saturday. Game time both nights is 7:05.

"My expectations for this season are to win the conference and to participate in nationals. I firmly believe we have the skill level and the talent to do it," said Cranston last week.

As the program and Cranston enter the fourth season, there are multiple changes and progressions that may allow the expectations become a reality.

"Stevens Point is the team to beat. They were 26-1 last year. We lost all five games to them, all by one goal. I am sure that they will be a better team this year, but I really think that we have closed the gap. I think that Point and ourselves will be at the top of the conference, but anyone can beat anyone else in the conference, just as in the men's conference," said Cranston about the 2002-03 NCHA season.

In the five games against the Falcons, the Pointers out shot UWRF 138-97. In 2002-03, the Falcon forwards will just simply have to put the puck to net more if they are to have any chance of beating Point and any other top ranked team. The defense will have to continue to stop the puck as they did last season against Point. The Falcon defense had to stop 41 more shots then the Pointer defense had to. If the Falcons can continue to stop the puck and increase their number of shots, they will definitely be one of the teams battling for the top spot in the conference.

Non-conference competition will help play a strong role in the quest to nationals. Playing top teams increase the strength of their schedule. Winning, and a tough schedule, allows for a team to be nationally ranked.

Gustavus Adlophus was a final-four contender and took third in 2002. "They [Gustavus] are always a nationally ranked team. We have never beaten them. We them this weekend, so that will be a test. Gustavus and St. Thomas will be the two toughest teams to beat in the MIAC," according to Cranston.

Returning skaters will have to use their veteran status to pull the team together and make things happen. Returning to the net is sophomore Marlene Yaeger "By far, [Yaeger] will be the most valuable returning player. She looks better than she did before she left off last year," says Cranston. During the 2001-02 season, Yaeger was on the ice for over 1500 minutes and had 598 saves. She had an impressive 1.83 goals against average, which was well under her opponent's average of 2.71. She finished with a .929 saves percentage.

The top seven scorers from 2001-02 are returning to the ice. If they are able to improve their game and incorporate into their game plan the new players, they may be able to accomplish the goal of making the national playoffs. Those top seven players had a combined total of 114 points. Senior Jenny Conzemius led the team with 16 goals and 26 points. Elisha Best was second with 10 goals and 18 points. "Best, Conzemious and Courtnet Canniff are together on a line. They have the skills to really make things happen. Conzemius and Best were our top two scorers the past two seasons," says Cranston.

After taking a year leave-of-absence, junior Lindsy Carlson returns to the Falcons and is expected to make a big impact on the team.

Expectations are high for the freshman line of Tiff Stencil, Ali Slinden and Leah Baron. They are believed to be the line that will step-up and make things happen. Freshmen Lou Paulson and Lindsay O'Keefe will be guided by sophomore Heather Egness. Egness had eight goals and four assists last season.

There are some definite changes to the roster and skills of the team, but physical changes are present as well. Hunt Arena went under renovation at the end of the season last year. New boards and glass were put in, the old ones now in the River Falls Youth Hockey Arena, and the locker rooms were updated.

The Falcon women will no longer have to dress in the Robert P. Knowles Recreation Center and walk down to the arena. They now have their own locker room in the arena. The men's and women's locker rooms are mirror images of each other.

"The renovations will definitely be a benefit to the team. It [Hunt Arena] has always been a nice facility, but this year, for the women, we can finally call it our home," says Cranston.

The only way to determine how a season is going to go is to wait until the end and check the results. With all of the new additions that will only strengthen the core of the team, there is no other option then to view positively on the 2002-03 Falcons.

Cranston summarizes the pre-season outlook: "The team will have to remain healthy and eligible. It is when everyone realizes that we are a team and we need each other, that we will be a good hockey team."
