Falcons Win NCHA Playoff Title March 4, 2001 The Falcons took a 2-1 win over UW-Superior to claim the NCHA Playoff Championship in action at Hunt Arena Sunday afternoon. After a scoreless first period, Elisha Best scored at 13:07 of the second period to give the Falcons the lead. Jenny Conzemius got the lone assist. At 16:20 the Falcons, now 19-7-1 overall, took a 2-0 lead when Hattie Hoff scored on a shot from the point with Susie Misheski assisting. UWS, now 18-5-0 overall, made it a game at 3:17 of the third period when Angela Harvieux scored with assists to Mika Sharpe and Becky Gallagher. UWRF goalie Stephanie Seiler made 25 saves and UWS's Kelly Timm stopped 18 shots. Falcons Top UWSP in NCHA Semi-Final Playoffs March 3, 2001 UW-River Falls got goals from four players on the way to a 4-1 win over UW-Stevens Point in an NCHA playoffs semi-final game played Saturday at Hunt Arena at UW-River Falls. The Falcons, now 18-7-1 overall, led 1-0 after one and 2-0 after two. Jenny Conzemius started the scoring at 1:43 of the first period with an assist from Megan Schelzetenberg. The Falcons went ahead, 2-0, at 7:48 of the second period when Jodi Hensch scored with assists to Hattie Hoff and Conzemius. UWRF went ahead 3-0 at 2:49 of the third when Karyl Hylle scored with an assist to Susie Misheski. UWSP, now 12-13-1, made it a 3-1 game at 14:20 when Mandy Rhyner scored with an assist from Jessica Barrick. The Falcons put the game away at 17:16 when Keri Deschene scored unassisted. UWRF goalie Jill Janikowski made 18 saves and UWSP's Diane Sawyer stopped 34 shots. UWRF will play UW-Superior in the playoff championship game at 3 p.m. on Sunday. UWSP faces Lake Forest in the game for third place at noon. Falcons Sweep Pointers in Physical 6-2 Win Feb. 25, 2001 Five Falcons scored to lead the team offensively, and Stephanie Seiler held the Pointers to just two goals in a 21-penalty contest at Hunt Arena Sunday afternoon. Katie Schwenke started it all off at 8:26 to get the Falcons going, and Mandy Stokes added a second goal, one-handed sliding into the goalie to finish off the first period, 2-0 Falcons. That goal came just three seconds after Hattie Hoff stepped out of the penalty box. Point stepped up in the second period, scoring the only goal of the 20 minutes, but that was little of a deterrant for UW-RF. Four goals in the third put the Pointers to sleep. Beth Betker, unassisted on a steal, made her way through traffic, collected herself just to the left of the goalie, and put it away in the top right corner. Then Jodi Hensch made things happen, her shot getting caught up in the crease and Jenny Conzemius finishing it off on power play. Later, at 12:01, an Elisha Best breakaway down the left side set up Hensch for the 5-1 lead. The Pointers slipped their second and final goal in just 25 seconds later, but Stokes came back at 15:03, short-handed, when Point goalie Diane Sawyer kicked a penalty-kill 'icing' back out, ironically right to Stokes, who then stormed the net and slipped the puck through Sawyer's legs for the finishing touch. Seiler came up with 18 saves as the Falcons launched 33 shots on goal. Of the 21 penalties, 12 were against UW-RF. Next weekend the Falcons will again match up with Stevens Point as two and three seeds in the NCHA Tournament, either noon or 3 p.m. next Saturday. Falcons Silence Pointers 5-0 Feb. 24, 2001 Jill Janikowski held the Pointers scoreless as Keri Deschene and Elisha Best led the Falcons to victory, 5-0 Saturday afternoon at Hunt Arena. Deschene started it off at 9:07 when Mandy Stokes gave her the puck from across the crease, and Deschene never hesitated, giving the Falcons the early 1-0. Best was next, flying by the benches on an unassisted breakaway and shooting it over the goalie's shoulder. Three minutes later, still in the first period, Jenny Conzemius broke into the scoring column when Megan Schulzetenberg set her up perfectly, similar to Deschene's goal. But this time, Conzemius' first attempt was halted. It was her self-rebounded shot that went in for the 3-0 lead. Though the second period was uneventful in shooting and scoring, the Pointers stepped up a little and put some heat on Janikowski. But she held, and in the third period, Best showcased more great moves, coming in from the left on Point's goalie Diane Sawyer, and beating her to the bottom right, assisted by Conzemius. Then Deschene put on the finishing touches at 18:40, taking Beth Betker's pass at the blue line, cutting back to the middle, and then cutting right again before she nailed the puck through the bottom left corner for goal. The Falcons out-shot the Pointers by a total of 32-16. In penalties, Mandy Stokes picked up a double minor, but overall they were pretty even, 5-6 Falcons-Pointers. Point returns at 2:05 p.m. Sunday afternoon, the Falcons last regular season game before next weekend's NCHA Tournament.
Falcons Blank Eau Claire 9-0 Feb. 10, 2001 Anna Permann's shutout performance at goalie led the Falcons in an equally fantastic offensive performance by the entire team. Seven Falcons scored in the onslaught, including Mandy Stokes, Susie Misheski, Keri Deschene, Elisha Best (twice), Jenny Conzemius (twice), Jodi Hensch, and Lindsy Carlson. Spreading their goals out, the Falcons opened the contest with three in the first period, then added four in the second and two in the third. Overall, the Falcons outshot the Blugolds 44-13. Now 15-7-1, the Falcons have a week off before UW-Stevens Point comes to town. Falcons Shut Down Eau Claire 9-2 Feb. 9, 2001 After holding the Blugolds shot-less through the first, it was a scoring bonanza as the Falcons unloaded six in the second period alone, taking the eventual 9-2 win at home Friday night. Julie Lutz took command of the crease for only her second time this season, but had an easy first period as her Falcon teammates completely kept the Blugolds out of contention. An 11-0 shot advantage in the first led the Falcons to a 2-0 lead with Karyl Hylle and Jodi Hensch finding goals early. In the second, Keri Deschene initiated the onslaught only a minute in, and Mandy Stokes followed with a short-handed goal to make it 4-0 Falcons. But then the Blugolds struck back. Bree Schacht slipped one right through Lutz's legs to put Eau Claire on the scoreboard. That, however, was far from a deterrant for Falcons as they picked up four more before the period came to a close. Lindsy Carlson, Elisha Best, Rachel Goodwin (scoring her first goal of the season) and Jenny Conzemius all had goals before the Blugolds put another one up late in the period. Up 8-2, the third period just had to be played for the Falcons to pick up the win, and Conzemius highlighted it with her second goal, the only one of the period, ending the rout 9-2 for the Falcons. The Falcons finished out-shooting Eau Claire 39-10, and of the five penalties on the night, UW-RF had all (Beth Betker came up with another penalty hat-trick). Improving to 14-7-0, the Falcons invite the Blugolds back to Hunt Arena for a second contest Saturday at 2:05 p.m. Falcons Sweep Lake Forest with 6-0 Win Feb. 3, 2001 Outshooting the Forresters 50-14, the Falcons took the two-game series with a convincing 6-0 win Saturday afternoon at Hunt Arena. Coming out with a much better start than Friday, the Falcons dominated from the start. In a period where the Forresters put merely three shots on goal, the Falcons burst ahead with a two-goal lead. Beth Betker started it off, launching a shot from behind the left circle that blew by Forrester goalie Theresa Taylor. Lindsy Carlson had the assist at 13:00. A couple minutes later, at 17:17, it was a Hattie Hoff shot that set up Karyl Hylle's goal and set the Falcons in motion, up 2-0. The second period began with a band when Mandy Stokes followed up on Katie Schwenke's shot for the 3-0 lead, but it would be a long thirty minutes of silence before they would strike again. Instead, they got physical with the Forresters, accumulating to a point where Betker resorted to throwing punches. Penalties in the second period made up for a penalty-less first as Betker served a double minor for slashing and her opponent, Lake Forest's Jill Fox, served two minutes for roughing. Overall, there was a coaches' consensus on poor officiating. In the third, the Falcons finished the contest with a trio of goals, icing on the cake. The first was Susie Misheski's rebound for goal, off Carlson's shot at 9:08. The second, at 10:43, came when a Falcon shot got lost in the crease and Schwenke poked it in. Finally, at 19:39, Keri Deschene's breakaway shot missed, but Stokes was there to pick up the rebound and her second goal of the night. Stephanie Seiler came up with the shutout, saving 14 shots. The Falcons, now 13-7-1, look forward to a similar series next weekend when the Eau Claire Blugolds come to town. Games are slated for 7:05 p.m. Friday and 2:05 p.m. Saturday, both at Hunt Arena. Falcons Comeback Beats Lake Forest, 4-2 Feb. 2, 2001 Down 2-1 after two periods, the Falcons out-shot the Forresters 19-3 in the third and scored three goals to beat Lake Forest at Hunt Arena Friday afternoon. The Forresters started the game off with a 9:43 goal on breakaway, but the Falcons came back at 16:11 when Elisha Best, bringing the puck in from the right side, put the puck on goal. Saved by the goalie, it came off right to Hattie Hoff and a moment later it was all tied at one. Despite a lack of overall shots, the Forresters got back on top 7:04 into the second with a point blank goal past Jill Janikowski. This time, though, the Falcons didn't answer, and entered the third period down 2-1. Calming Falcon fans throughout the arena, Jenny Conzemius stepped up at 6:30 and knocked one in from the right circle to tie. Then, at 12:50, three seconds before their power play expired, Karyl Hylle slapped a shot on goal, and Mandy Stokes grabbed the rebound. Unsuccessful, it was her second attempt that got through to give the Falcons the 3-2 lead. Finally, at 19:36, as the Forresters pulled their goalie, Conzemius broke toward the empty net, fighting against a Lake Forest opponent. As the two of them went down, Best saved the puck and put it in. Janikowski came up with 10 saves on the afternoon as the Falcons outshot the Forresters by a total of 38-12, despite leading the Forresters in penalties, 6-3. UW-RF advances to 12-7-1 and Lake Forest drops to 6-8-1 on the season. Lake Forest remains in town for a 1:05 p.m. rematch Saturday at Hunt Arena.
Falcons Win at St. Thomas, 4-1 Jan. 22, 2000 Elisha Best scored two goals and assisted on another to help lead the Falcons to a 4-1 win at St. Thomas Monday night. The Falcons grabbed a 1-0 lead at 9:41 in the first period when Suzie Misheski scored with an assist to Lindsy Carlson. Best scored her first goal at 18:18 of the second period with Hattie Hoff getting the assist, to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead after two periods. UST made it a 2-1 game with a goal at 6:55 of the third period. But Jenny Conzemius, playing in her first game with the Falcons, scored at 16:30 with assists to Jodi Hensch and Best. Best got the final goal of the night, unassisted, at 18:29. Jill Janikowski got the win in the nets for the Falcons making 18 saves. The Falcons had 30 shots on goal. The Falcons are now off until they host Lake Forest in a NCHA weekend series at Hunt Arena on Feb. 2-3. Falcons Lose in Overtime at Superior Jan. 20, 2001 Jenny Ginkel scored at 3:24 of overtime to help her team to a 1-0 win over the Falcons Saturday afternoon in Superior. The Falcons outshot the Jackets, 44-14, but coulnd't get the puck past UWS goalie Kelly Timm. The Falcons had 16 shots in the first period, 13 in the second, 12 in the third and three in overtime. Falcon goalie Jill Janikowski made 13 saves. Monday the Falcons play at St. Thomas in a non-conference game that starts at 7:05 p.m.
Falcons Drop 2-1 Decision to Yellowjackets Jan. 19, 2001 Yellowjacket Jodi Faye scored with 3:42 remaining in the game as UW-Superior defeated UW-River Falls, 2-1, in a WNCHA game Friday night. After a scoreless first period, the Falcons grabbed the lead when Lindsy Carlson scored an unassisted goal at the 8:15 mark of the second period. With :10 remaining in the period, the Yellowjackets tied the scored with a Theresa Williams goal. The game was tight all the way as both teams attempted 30 shots on goal, but Kelly Timm stopped one more than Jill Janikowski to earn the victory. The loss drops the Falcons to 10-6-1, 5-4 in the NCHA. They will go for the series split tomorrow at Wessman Arena. Falcons Dominate St. Ben's, 6-2 Jan. 17, 2001 Three Falcon goals in the first period propelled the women to a 6-2 onslaught of the Blazers Wednesday night at Hunt Arena. It was a display of total domination on the part of the Falcons. Unleashing 20 shots on goal and scoring three times was only the beginning. By the night's end, Blazer goalie Kate Hall came away with 52 saves and the 6-2 loss. Leading the offensive threat were the five-goal combo of Susie Misheski, who scored a hat-trick, and Hattie Hoff, who scored her only two goals of the season. Lindsy Carlson led it off, though, midway through the first period when she took the puck all the way, deaced left and then put it in the right corner for the goal, assisted by Hoff. Misheski then took credit for the next two of the period, a rebound off of another great Carlson maneuver 11:49 into the first, also assisted by Megan Schulzetenberg, and then a one-timer right in front of the net from a perfect Jody LaMotte pass from the corner, at 19:00. Meanwhile, Falcon goalie Jill Janikowski and the Falcon defense held the Blazers shot-less in the first five minutes and scoreless through the first period. In the second period, Hoff got into the mix with a pair of goals, split by the Blazers' first goal of the night. Both of Hoff's goals came from solid shots, the first at 1:09 from just inside the closest edge of the right circle, and her second at 13:47, launched from only ten feet inside the blue line. At that point, it was 5-1 Falcons with a 40-11 shot advantage, and the third period would bid well also. Following the Blazers' second goal of the night on a rebound a couple minutes after another six minute shot-less slump, Misheski topped the night off with her hat-trick goal at 12:43, a beautifully unassisted breakaway to the net. Coming in straight on, her fake left sold the goalie and her shot back to the right easily went in, giving the Falcons the comfortable 6-2 lead and eventual win. Janikowski came away from the contest with 17 saves. Only five penalties were assessed the entire night, only two against the Falcons. The win boosts the Falcons to a 10-5-1 overall record as they head to Superior this weekend for the two teams' rematch series. In November, the Falcons split the series with an overtime win in game two. Game times are 7 p.m. and 2 p.m. this Friday and Saturday at Superior.
Falcons Drop Another 3-1 Decision at UWSP Jan. 13, 2001 Pointer goaltender Diane Sawyer kept the Falcons in check for most of the game as UW-Stevens Point swept the series with a 3-1 victory Saturday night. Sawyer allowed just one goal in 23 shots on goal. After a scoreless first period, defenseman Nicole Busse gave the Pointers a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal at the 17:20 mark of the second period. Jenny Leppen and Lea Haas would ad goals to give the Pointers a three-goal advantage before Lindsy Carlson put the Falcons on the board with a goal at 13:35 of the third period. Anna Permann made 22 saves in a losing effort for the Falcons. The Falcons fall to 9-5-1, 5-3 in the WNCHA while the Pointers take over second place in conference with a 5-2-1 record. The team will next play a two-game series at UW-Superior next Friday and Saturday.
Falcons Drop 3-1 Decision at UWSP Jan. 12, 2001 Jodi Hensch scored the only Falcon goal in a 3-1 loss at UW-Stevens Point on Friday night. UWSP led 2-0 after the first period and 3-1 after two. Alison St. Peter and Nicole Busse scored the first-period goals for the Pointers. Hensch scored at 16:00 of the second period. Busse scored UWSP's third goal at 17:23 of the third period. UWRF goalie Stephanie Seiler made 11 saves and UWSP goalie Diane Sawyer made 31 saves. Saturday the Falcons play the second game of the series starting at 8 p.m.
Falcons Win, Tie in St. Kate's series Dec. 17, 2000 After a 4-2 victory at St. Kate's Saturday, the Falcons on Sunday sparked a third period comeback to take the lead but couldn't hold on to win, tieing 2-2 after O.T. The Wildcats came out ready to fight, out-shooting and scoring the Falcons 12-8 and the 1-0 lead. In the second period, the Falcons turned the tide, shooting a 17-7 advantage but still couldn't score. Finally, in the third, Lindsy Carlson, skating the length of the ice, cut in front and then maneuvered back to the side, set up and powered the puck through for the 1-1 tie. Two minutes later, it was Carlson again, launching a shot from behind the circle to score the go-ahead goal. But the Wildcats came back at 16:55 with a rebound off the boards to tie 2-2. Dodging a couple close calls in overtime, Jill Janikowski and the Falcons held off on penalty kill to come out still tied. Janikowski came up with 25 saves on the afternoon. Saturday, Janikowski repelled 17 shots in the Falcons' 4-2 win over St. Kate's. Despite controlling the game 14-6 in shots, the Falcons remained scoreless as the Wildcats grabbed the first goal on a one-timer in the corner from the opposite side of the net. The Falcons came back in the second, though, scoring on power play at the hands of Carlson, who once again maneuvered in for the kill. Another shot by Carlson was tipped in by Elisha Best a couple minutes later for the Falcon 2-1 lead. At the end of the second, Karyl Hylle capitalized on scramble at the net. The third period saw both teams add one more, both on power play. Another scramble at the net after Beth Betker brought the puck in from behind ended when Katie Schwenke put it in. The 4-2 win and Sunday's 2-2 tie give the Falcons an overall 9-3-1 record as they head into Christmas break.
Falcons Win 5-1; Sweep Series at UWEC Dec. 9, 2000 Keri Deschene scored
twice to lead the Falcons to a 5-1 win at UW-Eau Claire Saturday night. The Falcons scored the first two goals of the game. Susie Misheski scored at 3:52 and Deschene at 12:25 of the first period. UWEC made it a 2-1 game at 17:57 of the period. Deschene scored her second of the night at 8:08 of the second period. Mandy Stokes and Jody LaMotte each scored third-period goals. Anna Permann made 18 saves in the Falcon goalie to get the win. The Falcons had 35 shots on goal. The Falcons are in action again on Saturday when they go to St. Catherine for a 7:30 p.m. non-conference game.
Falcons Clobber Blugolds Dec. 8, 2000 Three Falcons scored two goals as UW-River Falls shutout UW-Eau Claire, 8-0, in NCHA action Friday night. Leading 1-0 on a Elisha Best goal after a period, the Falcons battered Blugold goaltender Erin Bray with three goals in the second period. Mandy Stokes, Katie Schwenke, and Nicole Marcella each scored goals in the period to make the score 4-0. The trio would be at it again in the third period where each would add another goal. Keri Deschene added the Falcons other goal. Falcon goaltender Julie Lutz stopped all 10 shots attempted by the Blugolds. The Falcons outshot the Blugolds 31-10. The Falcons inprove to 7-3-1, 4-1 in the WNCHA. The Blugolds fall to 3-10, 0-5 in conference play.
Falcons Sweep Lake Forest Dec. 2, 2000 The Falcons swept a two-game NCHA series over Lake Forest over the weekend winning 3-1 on Friday and 5-0 on Saturday. The Falcons, now 6-2 overall and 3-1 in the NCHA, got goals from Jodi Hensch, Elisha Best and Karyl Hylle in Friday's win. LFC scored the only goal of the first period, but thje Falcons got the only three goals of the second period. Goalie Stephanie Seiler made 18 saves to get the win and the Falcons launched 39 shots on goal. Information on Saturday's 5-0 win was not available. The Falcons host St. Thomas in a non-conference game on Wednesday at the Hunt Arena. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
Falcons Sweep Bethel with 6-2 win November 18, 2000 A landslide 34-13 shot advantage and a Katie Schwenke hat trick propelled the Falcons to a 6-2 win Saturday afternoon at Hunt Arena. The Falcons came out aggressive offensively, and a Hattie Hoff shot tipped in by Jody LaMotte started it off at 2:29. Rachel Goodwin also had an assist on the goal. But the Royals had something to say as well. With a tough Falcon defense, the Royals only shot three on goal in the first period, but they were all about placement. The first, at 7:52, beat Stephanie Seiler on the rebound. Friday night's hat-tricker Lindsy Carlson hooked up on a Jodi Hensch pass, skated out in front from the corner and put it in for the 2-1 lead. Just two minutes later, it was Katie Schwenke's turn, launching a shot from behind the circle that glanced off the goalie's shoulder and in. It was her first goal of the season, and would also become the first of a hat trick. At the end of the first, Bethel climbed back into the thick of things with another quick shot for goal. The five-goal first period hinted at a pace difference between the first and second period, but was misleading. Only one goal would surface in the second, but the Falcons would produce more shots on goal. The 4-2 lead came at 3:16 when Carlson and Mandy Stokes broke on a 2-on-1. Carlson brought the puck up the ice and, after taking the defender, dished the puck off to Stokes, who fired it through for the score. The third period was all Schwenke. Her second goal came from tipping a Carlson shot at 4:25, and her third was a rebound that she flipped up over the goalie's pads, giving the Falcons a 6-2 lead and the sure-win. The Falcons defense held the Royals to only 13 shots on goal, and Seiler repelled 11 of them. Offensively, the Falcons came up with 34 shots on goal. The Falcons, now 4-2, will meet Lake Forest for the first time in a conference match-up after Thanksgiving, at Lake Forest both Friday and Saturday, Dec. 1-2.
Falcons Rout Royals 9-2 November 17, 2000 Highlighted by a Lindsy Carlson hat trick, the Falcons routed the Royals 9-2 Friday night at Columbia Arena. Out-shooting the Royals 53 to 22, the Falcons started gradually, scoring just two in the first period, but went on to capture three in the second before Bethel responded. An additional four goals in the third period put the finishing touches on the contest as Anna Permann held off the Royal offensive attack. Jodi Hensch started it all off at 6:06 with a goal from Katie Schwenke. Susie Misheski followed at 18:27 with a goal from Keri Deschene and Lindsy Carlson, making it 2-0 Falcons at the end of the first period. Karyl Hylle came out shooting in the second period, scoring at 1:45 from Rachel Goodwin and Nicole Marcella. Then Carlson took over at 11:43 with the first of three consecutive goals, interrupted only by a Royal goal early in the third period. Carlson's first came with assists from Hensch and Goodwin. Her second, at 16:20, was on power play and assisted by Hylle. And her third, at 12:00 into the third, came with help from Marcella. And that goal came Bethel's second and last of the evening, with only 6:20 left to go. But the Falcons weren't even close to done. With two and a half minutes to go, Elisha Best put the puck in the back of the net, assisted by Hensch. Shortly after that, it was Hensch herself, scoring from Carlson and Goodwin assists on power play. And finally, within the final minute of the game, Misheski knocked in her second of the night with assists from Jody LaMotte and Deschene, a power play goal as well. The Falcons out-penalized the Royals 7 to 4. The Falcons scored on three of their four power play opportunities. Permann's debut in the crease saw 22 shots, and she came away with 20 saves. The Royals come to Hunt Arena Saturday for a 2:05 p.m. start on Falcon ice.
Falcons Split Series with 4-3 O.T. win over Jackets November 11, 2000 In a back-and-forth battle where neither team ever acquired a two-goal lead, the Falcons claimed victory in O.T. Saturday to split the series with Superior. The Falcons came out looking much better than Friday night's first period as they out-shot the Yellowjackets 11-7 in the first. And then at 8:30, short-handed, Katie Schwenke and Lindsy Carlson gave Elisha Best best the puck right in front of the net, and she tipped it in for the score. Five and a half minutes later, however, the Jackets responded when Monica Mollen launched a long shot from beyond the circle that Falcon goaltender Jill Janikowski couldn't stop, giving Superior the tie, 1-1. In the second period, Keri Deschene broke away early and didn't stop until the puck was in the back of the net, at 2:33. She was assisted by Carlson. Once again, though, the Jackets responded. This time, at 5:41, Thereasa Williams took a great pass and converted from the edge of the crease. The third period saw Superior take their first and only lead of the game at 3:18 with another goal from point blank. Stepping up to match the game before time ran out, the Falcons succeeded at 12:39 when captain Mandy Stokes scored on a pass from Deschene, deadlocking the game at threes. The remaining seven and a half minutes would go without a score and force the contest into overtime. In the O.T. period, at only 27 seconds in, Beth Betker took the period's first shot from behind the right circle and powered it past the Jackets' goaltender, Kelly Timm, for the game-winner. Janikowski came away with 27 saves as both teams compiled 30 shots on goal. The 4-3 O.T. win split the series 1-1 between the two conference rivals. River Falls emerges with a 2-2 overall record while the Jackets drop to 3-1. Next weekend the Falcons take on Bethel College, at Bethel Friday night at 6:40 p.m. and then at home Saturday at 2:05 p.m.
Falcons Slip to Superior 2-1 November 10, 2000 After letting the Yellowjackets score two goals in the first period, the Falcons battled back to out-shoot Superior but lose 2-1. Superior's first goal came on a weak shot at 9:57 that slipped through Stephanie Seiler's defense, and the second came at 17:41 on a defenseless shot that Seiler was unable to save. But in the second, the Falcons shut down the Yellowjackets offense, holding them to just three shots on goal. Later, at 17:28, the Falcons finally capitalized when Karyl Hylle knocked in a Rachel Goodwin shot from point blank. Continuing to dominate in the third, UW-RF threatened the Jackets with a number of breakaways, but they weren't able to convert. Meanwhile, Superior didn't even shoot until seven minutes into the period. Then in the sixteenth minute, with pressure mounting, the Falcons put the puck in the net, but it was called off because of a player in the crease. A minute later, Elisha Best broke to the goal but couldn't get the shot off before she got together with a Superior skater and then their goalie. The final three minutes were unproductive for the Falcons and so they were forced to swallow the close 2-1 defeat. UW-RF edged Superior in penalties, 4-3 and out-shot the Jackets 23-15. The two will resume their grudge match when Hunt Arena again hosts on Saturday at 1:05 p.m.
Falcons Lose at Gustavus 4-2 November 4, 2000
UWRF had a 1-0 lead after one period and the game was tied 1-1 after two. Beth Betker scored the team's goal at 15:54 of the first period. GAC took a 2-1 lead in the third period before UWRF's Betker scored the team's second goal at 2:02. But GAC scored at 2:51 and 8:31 to ice the game. UWRF goalie Stephanie Seiler made 29 saves while UWRF had 14 shots on goal. The Falcons will host UW-Superior this weekend at Hunt Arena with games starting at 7:05 on Friday and 1:05 on Saturday.
Falcons Upset St. Mary's 3-0 November 3, 2000
Despite a rather uneventful first period in which both teams adjusted to being back in game situations, the Falcons shattered the silence in the second period. At 3:56, freshman Lindsy Carlson put her moves on the Cardinal defensemen and beat the goalie with a solid shot from the inside edge of the left circle. Assisted by freshmen Nicole Marcella and Karyl Hylle, the goal gave the Falcons the 1-0 lead. Meanwhile, Stephanie Seiler kept the Falcons ahead by repelling 13 shots on goal in the second period and 16 in the third, maintaining a shutout all 60 minutes. Then, in the late second and throughout the third, the Falcons overcame persistent penalty troubles and Elisha Best came through at 4:53, scoring on a rebounded Katie Schwenke shot. Playing penalty kill to their best, the Falcons held on despite being outshot 29-17 in those last two periods. Finally, when the Cards pulled their goalie in the last half minute, Best finished off the game with an empty netter from Carlson at 19:53. The Falcons outnumbered St. Mary's in penalties 10-7, and St. Mary's outshot the Falcons 33-25. The win gives the Falcons their first of the season, 1-0, and boosts their confidence going into an equally challenging Gustavus Adolphus Saturday night in St. Peter.
