Falcon Men's Hockey Player of the Week

Feb. 18, 2002

Forward Jamie Steinert (So., Maple Grove, Minn. Osseo HS) helped the Falcons to two wins over UW-Eau Claire in the NCHA first-round playoffs. In Friday’s 4-2 win he scored the team’s first goal. Saturday, in the team’s 6-2 win, he scored the team’s fifth goal.

 

 

 

Feb. 11, 2002

Forward Nate Kotewa (Jr., Fairmont, Minn.) helped the Falcons finish 1-1 last weekend. UWRF lost a close 2-1 decision to St. Norbert on Friday, but came back to beat Lake Forest, 4-0 on Saturday. In the 4-0 win, Kotewa led the Falcons with two goals. He opened the scoring with a short-handed goal at 14:35 of the first period and that proved to be the game-winning goal. His second goal came at 19:46 of the second period and gave the Falcons a 3-0 lead at the time.

 

 

Feb. 4, 2002

Goalie Jacque Vezina (Jr., Hudson, Wis.) helped the Falcons win two games last weekend at Superior, 4-3 and at St. Scholastica, 6-2. At Superior he made 40 saves, eight in the first period and 16 in both the second and third stanzas. At St. Scholastica he finished with 25 saves, six in the first, 11 in the second and eight in the third. "Jacque had an outstanding game at Superior and was solid all weekend long," Coach Steve Freeman said.

 

 

 

Jan. 21, 2002

Goalie Jacque Vezina (Jr., Hudson, Wis.) tied a single-season record with his fourth shutout of the year in a 5-0 win over UW-Stout Saturday at the Hunt Arena. Vezina made 17 saves in the game. In Friday’s 2-1 overtime loss at UW-Stout, he made 33 saves, to keep the Falcons in the game.

 

 

 

Jan. 14, 2002

Goalie Jacque Vezina (Jr., Hudson, Wis.) picked up his third shutout of the season in the win over Con.-Moorhead on Wednesday. He stopped 18 shots. Vezina needs just one more shutout this year to tie the single-season shutout record. He has four career shutouts.

 

 

 

Dec. 17, 2001

Forward Nate Kotewa (Jr., Fairmont, Minn.) helped the Falcons to two wins last weekend. Friday the Falcons won at Augsburg, 4-2, and beat St. John’s at home on Saturday, 6-1. In Saturday’s win he had two assists.

 

 

 

Dec. 10, 2001

Forward Josh Schlipp (Fr., Chisago Lakes, Minn.) had a big weekend for the Falcons as the team split two games. In Friday’s 5-4 loss to St. Thomas Schlipp scored two goals and had one assist. In Saturday’s 4-0 win he added two assists. The freshman leads the team in scoring with 10 goals and eight assists for 18 points in 12 games.

 

 

Nov. 19, 2001

Goalie Jacque Vezina (Jr., Hudson, Wis.) helped the Falcons to two wins over MIAC opponents last weekend. In Friday’s 4-1 win at Hamline he made 32 saves. Saturday he made 17 saves in the team’s 6-1 win. "He had a very, very strong performance," head coach Steve Freeman said.

 

 

 

Nov. 12, 2001

Forward Rob Novak (So., Hayward, Wis.) played a key role for the Falcons as they won and tied in two games last weekend at Hunt Arena. Friday the Falcons beat St. Scholastica, 5-1 and Saturday the Falcons tied with Superior, 3-3. Saturday Novak scored the team’s first goal in the second period to tie the game at the time, 1-1. "Rob played a really good weekend and he worked hard. His speed was really a factor," Coach Steve Freeman said.

 

 

Nov. 5, 2001

Goalie Jacque Vezina (Jr., Hudson, Wis.) had two solid games for the Falcons as the team tied Eau Claire (2-2) and beat Stevens Point (4-0). Vezina picked up his first shutout of the season, and the second of his career, in the win over UWSP. He made 27 saves in the game. On Friday he stopped 24 shots in the tie with UWEC. He stopped 51-53 shots in the two games and had a .962 saves percentage.

 

 

Oct. 29, 2001

Forward Evan Stensrud (Jr., Minnetonka, Minn.) helped lead the Falcons to two wins over Marian College last weekend. He scored the team’s first goal in Friday’s 5-3 win. Saturday he scored the team’s second goal in a 4-2 win. It was a power-play goal. "Evan played very strong with the puck and made some great plays. He capitalized on his opportunities around the net," Coach Steve Freeman said.
