Fourth Quarter Comeback Sparks 13-12 Falcon Win

Nov. 9, 2002

The Falcons scored 13 unanswered points in the last seven minutes of Saturday's game against UW-Oshkosh to claim the team's first WIAC victory, 13-12, at Ramer Field.

Trailing 12-0 in the final quarter, John Peterlik sparked the Falcon comeback, taking a pitch straight to the sideline and then turning the corner. He evaded three tackles in pursuit and dashed 42 yards for the score. Adam Bergdahl's extra point was good and would prove critical.

The Titans then fumbled two plays later and Falcon captain Luke Miska recovered. However, the UW-RF offense went three-and-out and punted with 4:24 to go.

On third and five from his own 12-yard line, Titan quarterback Nick Wara's pass over the middle was picked off by Kyle Hoegh at the 19, and Hoegh returned it all the way through a number of Titans to the end zone, giving the Falcons a 13-12 lead with 3:25 remaining. Dustin Vogelgesang's two-point pass attempt was broken up.

Oshkosh got the ball back and drove to the Falcon 45, where it faced fourth down and two yards with just over a minute and a half left. Nick Kilton took the handoff and bounced to the outside left, where Miska met him and drove him a couple yards horizontally before taking him down. Despite reaching for the first down, Kilton's attempt came up less than half a foot short, and the Falcons took the final possession.

Peterlik broke away on third down but then slid to the ground after 30 yards to run the clock out for the win.

The Falcons controlled the clock with 32:45; Oshkosh had 27:15. The Falcons out-rushed the Titans 225 yards to 195. UW-O passed for 110 yards; the Falcons had 46. Oshkosh lost one of three fumbles; the Falcons recovered both of their two. Both teams threw one interception.

UW-RF was 3-of-15 on third down. UW-O converted six of 17.

Peterlik led all rushers with 11 carries for 113 yards. UW-O's Andy Stern was next with 18 rushes for 103 yards.

Vogelgesang rushed 24 times for 79 yards and completed 2-of-8 passes for 46 yards with one interception.

Wara rushed 17 times for 65 yards for the Titans and completed 11-of-21 passes for 110 yards with one interception.

Bryon Grossenbacher led Falcon receivers with a catch for 32 yards. The other pass went to Mitch Johnson for 14 yards.

Titan Jeremy James led UW-O receivers with four catches for 34 yards. Kris Johnson caught twice for 48 yards.

Both teams missed field goals in the contest. UW-O missed a 27-yarder in the fourth quarter, and Bergdahl missed a 32-yarder in the third quarter.

The Falcons had four sacks on Wara. Jeff Horton added two to his league-leading eight. Ben Gillett, Josh Meyer, Nate Hendrickson and Aaron Retzlaff contributed to the others.

Gillett led UW-RF tacklers with 11. Hoegh had 10 and the big interception/touchdown, Miska had nine, and Horton had seven. Jake Norby, Lewis Parish and Meyer each had six.

The Falcons. now 2-7 overall and 1-5 in the WIAC, will next play Saturday at Platteville at 1 p.m.

Oct. 26, 2002

The Falcons lost a 21-7 WIAC decision to UW-Stout Saturday afternoon at Ramer Field.

The Falcons dropped to 0-4 in the WIAC and 1-6 overall. Stout, ranked 16th in the latest AFCA Poll, improved its overall record to 6-1 and 3-1 in the WIAC.

The Blue Devils jumped out to a 7-0 lead when Ryan Englebert scored on a one-yard run at 6:18 of the first quarter. Evan Larsen added the extra point kick. Stout drove 80 yards in eight plays and took 3:53 off the clock. The big play of the drive was a 30-yard pass completion from quarterback Nick Ohman to Adam Moiles. Ohman hit Matt Prester with a 24-yard completion to the UWRF one to set up Englebert's touchdown run on the next play. There was no more scoring in the first half.

Stout took a 13-0 lead at 9:30 of the third quarter when Luke Bundgaard scored on a three-yard run. After a UWRF punt, Stout drove 72 yards in eight plays and took 3:48 off the clock. Ohman hit Sprester with a 35-yard pass play that give Stout a first down at the UWRF seven. Bundgaard scored two plays later.

A fumble recovery and return by Neil Mantor set up the Falcons touchdown. Ohman hit Dan Austin on a pass but Mantor ripped the ball from Austin and returned it 43 yards to the Stout 25. A penalty on Stout gave the Falcons the ball at the Stout 15. John Peterlik scored on a two-yard run at :43 of the third quarter to make it a 13-7 game.

Stout took the ensuing kickoff to score the final points of the game. They drove 64 yards in eight plays and took 4:25 off the clock. Falcons Lose to Stevens Point, 38-27

Oct. 19, 2002

The Falcon football team jumped out to a 20-0 lead and led the entire game until midway through the fourth quarter, but they couldn’t contain a late-game UW-Stevens Point rally, losing 38-27 Saturday at Ramer Field.

The Falcons rushed for 168 yards and passed for 133 in the loss. UWSP’s Cory Flisakowski caught four touchdown passes from Scott Krause to help lead the Pointers to victory. They passed for 219 yards and rushed for 120.

On the first play from scrimmage, Dustin Vogelgesang went right to the passing game and found Weesayma Kennedy, who reached for the reception and shook off an ankle tackler to go 68 yards to the end zone. Adam Bergdahl added the extra point.

On Stevens Point’s first play, Roman Johnson came up with an interception to give the ball right back to the UWRF offense, but the Falcons were forced to punt after getting to the Pointer 35-yard line.

The two squads volleyed punts until the end of the quarter, when after a fourth-and-one play where John Peterlik avoided a tackle in the backfield to get the first down, Vogelgesang rushed to the corner for an 8-yard touchdown score. Bergdahl’s extra point attempt was wide left, making it 13-0 UWRF.

Three plays later, Nate Hendrickson forced Krause to fumble and Nic Rue recovered for the Falcons at the Pointer 24-yard line.

Preston Horton rushed for 13 yards and Vogelgesang went for six before Peterlik put the ball into the corner of the end zone from five yards out. Bergdahl made it 20-0.

Two plays into their ensuing drive, the Pointers’ Krause hit Flisakowski across the middle and he outran everyone for a 66-yard touchdown reception. Pointer Ryan Mullaney’s extra point kick bounced off the left upright no good.

The Falcons’ next two drives netted three yards, and then a big Pointer punt return set the stage for a Krause dump over the middle to Flisakowski nine yards out for the touchdown. The extra point veered wide left, making it 20-12 UWRF.

With under a minute in the half, Krause fumbled again, and Hendrickson recovered for the Falcons. With four seconds to play, Bergdahl missed a 35-yard field goal to the right.

A 16-play, 85-yard, eight and a half minute Pointer drive consumed much of the third quarter and added six more points to the scoreboard when Krause under pressure threw to the end zone after a light hit and scored to Flisakowski, 16 yards out. The score brought the Pointers within two, 18-20.

Capping the ensuing Falcon drive, seven plays and 67 yards later, Vogelgesang passed to Peterlik in the flats, where he juked a tackler to miss and scampered 28 yards to the end zone. Bergdahl made it 27-18.

But two plays later, Flisakowski bested his previous long with a 68-yard score from Krause. There was no one else in his deep half of the field.

An unsuccessful Falcon drive gave the Pointers another chance, and they took the lead after a quick 71-yard drive capped by Krause from one-yard out. It was 31-27 UWSP at that point.

A fumbled handoff between Vogelgesang and Peterlik three plays into the next drive led to another one-yard Krause score and put UWSP up 38-27.

Another Falcon fumble, this time Vogelgesang, narrowed the Falcons’ opportunities. The UWRF defense stopped the Pointers on fourth down with just under two minutes to go, but Vogelgesang’s deep pass was intercepted, sealing the loss.

The Pointers had 17 first downs, five more than the Falcons. UWRF led in time of possession with 32:28. Both teams lost the ball twice to fumbles and once to interceptions.

Peterlik led the Falcon rushing game with 16 carries for 80 yards and a touchdown. Preston Horton carried 20 times for 58 yards. Vogelgesang was 5-for-13 for 133 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. Peterlik caught three for 58 yards, Kennedy one for 68 yards. Both had touchdown catches. Vogelgesang was sacked three times.

Bergdahl averaged 33.6 yards on eight punts.

The Pointers’ Flisakowski had only the four touchdown catches for 159 yards. Krause was 11-for-22 for 219 yards, four touchdowns and an interception. He was sacked twice.

The sacks were from Kyle Hoegh, Hendrickson and Jeff Horton. Hoegh also led tacklers with 11. Luke Miska had 10 tackles and a pass defensed. Hendrickson was next with nine tackles, Abe Garcia with seven, and Jake Norby with five as well as a pass defensed.

The Falcons, now 1-5, 0-3 in the WIAC, stay at home next weekend for UW-Stout. The game starts at 1 p.m. at Ramer Field.

Falcons Stumble at Eau Claire, 34-12

Oct. 12, 2002

Despite a valiant defensive effort for most of the game, the UW-River Falls offense committed four turnovers at critical times Saturday afternoon at UW-Eau Claire's Carson Park and rushed for less than 200 yards in the 34-12 loss during the Blugolds' Homecoming.

UWEC started the game off with an immediate score after going 67 yards on 12 plays. The Falcon defense held the Blugolds at the 1-yard line and forced a 22-yard field goal. UWEC took the first lead, 3-0.

UWRF responded with a successful opening drive of its own, marching 70 yards on 12 plays and scoring on a John Peterlik run. Adam Bergdahl's extra point was blocked, making it a 6-3 game.

UWEC scored twice more in the first half, first on a 1-yard touchdown run and then on another field goal from 24 yards, giving the Blugolds a 13-6 halftime advantage.

In the third quarter, UWEC began four consecutive drives in Falcon territory, and all but the last were stopped by the UWRF defense. UWEC finally scored after a Falcon fumble.

The Blugolds' three-touchdown second half consisted of two passing scores and another rushing score.

The Falcons managed to put another six points on the scoreboard when it blocked a UWEC punt deep in UWEC territory and Matt Farmer recovered it in the end zone. The extra point attempt on that score was missed wide.

The Falcons rushed 47 times for 181 yards. UWRF had three fumbles lost and one late game interception. UWRF was 2-for-6 for 45 yards.

UWEC rushed for 298 yards and two touchdowns on 48 carries. The Blugolds completed 7-of-18 passes for 91 yards and two touchdowns.

The Falcons had four sacks - two by Jeff Horton - and recovered two fumbles. John Peterlik led all Falcon rushers with 121 yards.

The loss puts the Falcons at 1-4 overall and 0-2 in the WIAC. Next Saturday UWRF hosts another conference battle with UW-Stevens Point. Game starts at 2 p.m.

Falcons Lose Homecoming Game to Whitewater, 35-14

Oct. 5, 2002

UW-Whitewater overpowered UW-River Falls at its own game in Saturday’s WIAC opener, out-rushing the run-oriented Falcons 285 yards to 238 in a 35-14 win at Ramer Field.

The Warhawks took a 7-0 lead on their second possession of the contest when quarterback Randy Borgardt hit wide receiver Andy Rice on a 23-yard scoring strike with 5:26 remaining in the first quarter.

But the Falcons offense quickly responded with an eight-play, 76-yard drive, culminating with a 9-yard touchdown run by quarterback Tom Pulford. The score was set up two plays earlier with a 23-yard-completion from Pulford to halfback John Peterlik on third and 21.

With the score tied 7-7 in the second quarter, the Warhawks rushing attack kicked into high gear on an 80-yard, 11-play drive capped by running back Kyle Mayhugh’s touchdown run from the 1-yard-line. The scoring drive featured 10 running plays, led by Mayhugh’s 61 yards on eight carries.

The Falcons went three-and-out on their next possession, but the Falcons defense also forced the Warhawks to punt on Whitewater’s ensuing possession.

With Warhawk punter Kyle Haug on his own 25-yard-line, Falcons defensive back Lewie Parish busted through the line and blocked the kick. Teammate Jake Norby recovered the ball, setting up the Falcons offense in great scoring position at the Whitewater15-yard-line. Four plays later, Peterlik scored from the 2-yard-line to knot the score at 14-14.

Sticking with their overpowering ground attack, the Warhawks drove 68 yards on 10 plays, ending with fullback Keiya Square’1-yard-touchdown run, his first of two on the day. The score gave Whitewater a 21-14 halftime lead.

Whitewater stunned the Falcons by recovering an onside kick to open the second half. But the Falcons defense forced the Warhawks to turn the ball over on downs at the River Falls 43-yard-line.

The Falcons drove to the Whitewater 28-yard-line on their ensuing possession, but a Peterlik fumble at the Whitewater 20-yard-line ended the Falcons best scoring opportunity of the second half.

The Warhawks took advantage of the turnover with a eight-play, 74-yard scoring drive capped by a 11-yard touchdown reception by wide receiver Sean Erner from Borgardt.

The Warhawks later added another score when Square took a handoff 35 yards for a score early in the fourth quarter.

Fullback Dan Beyer led the Falcons offense with 97 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries. Peterlik garnered 54 yards on 14 attempts. Pulford carried 13 times for 47 yards and one touchdown. Pulford completed 4-of-7 passes for 40 yards.

The Falcons will look to earn their first WIAC win of the season next Saturday when the club visits UW-Eau Claire. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.

Falcons Beat St. Ambrose

Sept. 28, 2002

The Falcon offense controlled 38:47 of game time and the defense held the Fighting Bees scoreless in the second half to earn UWRF's first win of the season, 23-14, in Davenport, Iowa, Saturday afternoon.

Running backs Dan Beyer, 25 carries for 113 yards, and John Peterlik, 19 rushes for 87 yards, led the Falcons to a 275-yard rushing day while the Fighting Bees went to the air for the bulk of their 235-yard total offense. The Falcons fumbled once and threw one interception while St. Ambrose lost three fumbles and threw four interceptions. The Falcons also had three sacks, knocking the Fighting Bees back 18 yards.

The Falcons claimed the game's first first down just over five minutes into the contest and, sustained by big runs from Beyer and Tom Pulford, finished the drive almost five minutes later in the end zone on a Peterlik 3-yard touchdown run. Adam Bergdahl added the extra point.

An interception by Roman Johnson against Fighting Bee quarterback John McDowell three plays later and Johnson's subsequent 33-yard return put the Falcons right back within striking distance. A big run by Gerardo Aguirre and a pass from Pulford to Mitch Johnson highlighted the drive as the Falcons pushed the game into the second quarter and added a 24-yard Bergdahl field goal to make it 10-0.

Trying an onside kick, the Falcons got the ball back again in Fighting Bee territory, and Peterlik shortly after went 39 yards for another score. Bergdahl's extra point made it 17-0.

Meanwhile the Falcon defense kept St. Ambrose from attaining a first down until midway through the second quarter, when the Fighting Bees' McDowell found receiver Matt Walker for a 48-yard completion. Another big pass play put them inside the 5-yard line, and Brandon Adolphs scored on a 2-yard run. St. Ambrose's extra point kick failed, making the score 17-6 UWRF.

After a Falcon fumble-Fighting Bee interception (to Neil Mantor) exchange, the Falcons punted and St. Ambrose's passing game marched down the field for another score, this time a 15-yard completion from McDowell to Walker. Their two-point attempt was good, narrowing the Falcon lead to 17-14.

In the third quarter, both teams volleyed punts until Abe Garcia forced and recovered a fumble at the SAU 1-yard line, after which SAU starting quarterback McDowell left the game injured. Beyer pushed into the end zone on second down and Bergdahl's kick was blocked, giving the Falcons their 23-14 advantage.

Garcia intercepted McDowell's first pass of the fourth quarter, but a Bergdahl field goal attempt from 30 yards missed its mark. Nevertheless, the Falcons' Nate Mueller forced a fumble on SAU's only remaining threatening drive, and Neil Mantor picked off back-up quarterback Charlie Rogucki's desperation pass with less than a minute to play.

The Falcons rushed 65 times for 275 yards and completed 1-of-5 passes for 14 yards and one interception. SAU was 17-of-33 for 218 yards passing and four interceptions. The Falcons held SAU to 22 rushes for 17 yards. Behind Beyer and Peterlik, Pulford rushed 12 times for 34 yards and Aguirre was 4-for-28 yards. Johnson caught the only UWRF pass.

Defensively, Mantor had two interceptions, Garcia and Johnson each one. Luke Miska led Falcon tacklers with eight, followed by Garcia with seven and a sack. Jeff Horton had four tackles and two sacks. Kyle Hoegh and Roman Johnson also had four tackles. Garcia and Mueller each recovered a fumble.

Bergdahl averaged 33.8 yards on eight punts.

Next Saturday is UWRF Homecoming and the Falcons open the WIAC schedule with UW-Whitewater at 1 p.m. at Ramer Field. The Falcons are 1-2 overall.

Falcons Come Up Short in Fourth Quarter

Sept. 14, 2002

A late-game fumble gave the Falcons a 1:36 last chance, but the clock ran out on Tom Pulford's pass to Geraldo Aguirre as Aguirre was knocked out of bounds at the 3-yard line. The final score was 26-21 Concordia-St. Paul at Griffin Stadium Saturday.

The Falcons came out strong, forcing a fumble on the Golden Bears' first offensive play of the game, and five plays later quarterback Dustin Vogelgesang rumbled for 13 yards, carrying a pair of tacklers into the end zone.

The Falcon defense, two plays later, came up big again as Lewis Parish picked off Golden Bear quarterback James McNear. The Falcon offense was unable to capitalize, but the defense returned to stop Concordia on fourth down and two at the Falcon 10-yard line.

At the other goal line on the ensuing Falcon drive, the Golden Bears held UW-RF four times from inside the five-yard line.

The two teams stalemated well into the second quarter before a 90-yard Golden Bear drive found the end zone through the air for the 7-7 tie.

Getting the ball back with 45 seconds left in the half, Concordia went to the air again and two passes, for 39 and 25 yards, put them on the scoreboard again with only six seconds to go.

After a seven-point halftime deficit, the Falcons came back early in the third quarter Vogelgesang connected with Chris Anderson for a 21-yard passing score to tie the game at 14s.

Around that time, Vogelgesang was injured, forcing him out of the game and into an arm sling. Backup Tom Pulford's second drive after that yielded a Falcon lead. Roman Johnson returned a Golden Bear punt 23 yards to put the team in scoring position, and John Peterlik got outside and went 20 yards for the touchdown, making it 21-14 UW-RF.

Midway through the fourth quarter, a 23-yard passing touchdown closed the gap for Concordia, but the extra point kick went wide, allowing the Falcons a one-point lead.

The Falcons stalled with five minutes to play, and the Golden Bears began at their own one-yard line. After a near safety, a short pass to the 15-yard line gave Concordia some breathing room, and then they took a deep breath. McNear found hot target Joseph Mapson for a 53-yard catch and run. A play later, Sam Blocker finished off the 99-yard drive with a 32-yard rushing score. Their two-point attempt fell incomplete, but they had the five-point lead, 26-21.

It was then, after another unproductive offensive drive, that the Falcons recovered a fumble and took a close shot to upsetting the Division II contender.

The Falcons finished with 62 carries for 292 yards rushing and went 4-7-0 for 70 yards passing. Concordia rushed 34 times for 133 yards and passed 14-25-3 for 274 yards.

The Falcons controlled the clock for 33:42. UW-RF lost one fumble; the Golden Bears lost two and threw three interceptions.

John Peterlik led all rushers with 14-117. Dan Beyer was 12-71, and Dustin Vogelgesang went 16-54. Passing, Vogelgesang was 3-for-4 for 48 yards and a touchdown, and Tom Pulford was 1-for-2 for 22 yards.

Having a big day defensively were Abe Garcia and Nic Rue. Garcia had five solo tackles and two assists. Rue had four solos, two assists and a sack. Jake Norby had five solos and Nate Hendrickson had two solos and three assists. Cornerback Lewis Parish had four solos.

The Falcons have a bye next weekend before heading down to St. Ambrose, Iowa Sept. 28.

Turnovers Hurt Falcons in 15-7 Loss at Chadron

Sept. 7, 2002

The Falcon football team had too many turnovers and lost a 15-7 decision at Chandron State, Neb., Saturday afternoon.

Chadron State held a 15-0 lead at halftime. UWRF fumbled the ball eight times in the first half and lost four. One pass was also intercepted giving the Falcons five turnovers in the half. Ryan Mackey scored the first points of the game with a 31-yard field goal at 7:33 of the second quarter. Those points came after a Falcon fumble was recovered at the UWRF 18. CSC made the Falcons pay again after UWRF fumbled the ball away later in the quarter. CSC took control at the UWRF 28 and six plays later quarterback Shaun Eisenreich hit Amos Davis with a 6-yard pass for the score with 2:09 to play in the half. The extra point kick failed. The fumble problems continued on UWRF's next play when a fumbled pitch was recovered and returned 6-yards for a touchdown at 1:53. The extra point kick was blocked.

Falcon defensive end Jeff Cassellius made it a close game with 1:36 to play when he returned a fumble 11 yards for a touchdown. Cassellius forced the fumble and ran the recovery into the end zone. Adam Bergdahl added the point after.
