Meet the Falcons

Nick Basham
DE, 6-2, 224, Senior
Osceola, Wis.
Osceola High School

The Falcons need Nick Basham to be the playmaking defensive lineman he has been for the previous three seasons. The coaching staff says he has a nose for the football and a knack to make the big sack or force the big turnover. Defensive coach Kevin Bullis says Basham is in the elite group of defensive lineman he has coached while at UWRF. This playmaking ability was exemplified in his 2000 season where he made 23 solo tackles with 13 assists. Seventeen of those tackles were made behind the line of scrimmage. He was named Falcon Defensive Player of the Week twice last year. He made six tackles, two for loss, against Chadron and had five tackles, two for loss and a sack, in the season finale against Bemidji. He was named to the second All-WIAC team last season.

Dan Booth
HB, 5-10, 160, Sophomore
Hayward, Wis.
Hayward High School

Dan Booth hasn’t played much in the past couple years due to a loaded halfback position, but with the graduation of Nick Scribner and Mark Shepherdson, playing time is up for grabs. In his third year, coaches believe he is ready to make a contribution in the 2001 season.

Michael Brown
DB, 5-9, 181, Senior
St. Paul, Minn.
Humboldt High School

The fifth-year senior is one of the fastest players on the team and is good in bump and run coverage. Last season, Michael Brown was used heavily as an extra defensive back. This season, he is expected to compete for a starting job. Brown made five solo and six assisted tackles in 2000.

Ramar Edwards
WR, 5-6, 161, Sophomore
St. Paul, Minn.
Arlington High School

Ramar Edwards can help the Falcons in many ways during the upcoming season. Edwards has a lot of speed that can be used at a number of positions on the field. As a freshman, Edwards was a kickoff return specialist averaging 22.3 yards per return on 12 kickoffs. As a wide receiver, he caught one pass for 13 yards. He has also expressed some interest in joining the backfield as a running back.

Ryan Eiler
DT, 6-1, 240, Senior
Suamico, Wis.
Bay Port High School

As a freshman, Ryan Eiler was not a heavily recruited defensive lineman, but through a tremendous work ethic in the weight room and on the practice field has become a valuable part of the line. Last year he was rotated in at defensive tackle. This season, as a fifth-year senior, Eiler has the opportunity to start. Coaches are excited for Eiler because he has paid his dues and has earned his spot with the Falcons. Last season, Eiler made six solo and seven assisted tackles.

Kyle Erickson
OT, 6-5, 270, Srnior
St. Anthony, Minn.
St. Anthony High School

Kyle Erickson has dealt with injuries during much of his career with the Falcons. He has missed playing time with lower back and shoulder problems. When healthy, the coaching staff says he has a world of talent and will play a lot of football as a tackle or possibly a tight end.

Edgar Foster
OT, 6-4, 277, Junior
Princeton, Minn.
Cambridge-Isanti High School

Edgar Foster was a starter at tackle one year ago and had a very good season. Coaches say Foster was a stabilizing force on an offensive line that has lost three starters. The coaches are counting on him to play well again in 2001. Foster spent last semester in New Zealand.

Ben Gray
DB, 6-0, 178, Senior
Fond du Lac, Wis.
St. Mary’s Springs High School

Part of the Falcons’ talented defensive corps, Ben Gray is a three-year starter at outside linebacker. Although Gray isn’t big at 178 pounds, he is a very physical player. He runs a 4.6-second, 40-yard dash and has only seven percent body fat. He is one of the players that the Falcons will build their defense around. In 2000, Gray was sixth on the team in tackles with 24 solo and 14 assists. He was named Defensive Player of the Week for his performance against Stout. Gray made eight tackles, two behind the line of scrimmage, with one sack.

Bryon Grossenbacher

Clayton, Wis.
Clayton High School

In his third season, Byron Grossenbacher has a chance to crack the starting lineup with a wide open starting halfback race. Physically, Grossenbacher has the talent to play, but knowledge of the Falcon complicated wishbone offense will decide if he is ready to play.

Greg Gunderson
DB, 5-11, 168, Sophomore

Algona High School

Greg Gunderson has not played much in his three-year career with the Falcons, but should compete for playing time this season due to the team’s limited depth in the defensive backfield. Now the senior is largely responsible for motivating others. Hayward has also been a valuable playmaker. Last season, he was fourth on the team with 43 tackles, 30 solo and 13 assists. He was named Falcon Defensive Player of the Week twice during the 2000 season. Against La Crosse, Hayward made seven tackles. Tom Pulford
QB, 6-0, 190, Sophomore
Kichville, Minn.
Perham High School

Tom Pulford will be a part of the heated competition to grab the quarterback spot following the departure of senior Cory Mueller. He will have to battle with Billy Lowe and Dustin Vogelgesang for the starting position. He will compete for playing time this year at QB. As our tradition at the QB position demands he is a real student of the game. Another guy who has gotten himself ready through total commitment to the off season program. The sophomore will look to use the experience he got from the bench last season to help him this season.

Brad Roy
OT, 6-3, 240, Junior
Elk River, Minn.
Elk River High School

Brad Roy has really developed himself in the last three years. The Falcons expect him to play a lot of football for them this year. Nic Rue
DT, 6-0, 232, Sophomore
Portage, Wis.
Portage High School

Nic Rue saw only limited but important playing time last season in three games and assisted on one tackle. Rue will be competing for more playing time on the defensive line. He has the size and determination to develop into an outstanding player.

Justin Samuelson
DT, 6-0, 210, Sophomore
Cannon Falls, Minn.
Cannon Falls High School

Justin Samuelson played in seven games last season accumulating one assisted tackle. With so much competition in the backfield look for Samuelson to appear on special teams early on. The team looks to have him be a big contributor in special teams for the coming season.

Korwin Schmidt
TE 6-3, 234, Sophomore
Elma, Iowa
Crestwood High School

Korwin Schmidt moved from defensive line to tight end last year. With few bodies there this year he has a fine chance to get a lot of playing time. He is very big for that position and also has very good athletic ability and could become a top tight end for the Falcons.

Ben Smith

Hastings, Minn.
Hastings High School

Dustin Vogelgesang is the only other person other than Cory Mueller that saw time at quarterback. He will have to battle three other players to attain the coveted quarterback spot after the departure of Mueller. Vogelgesang, a sophomore, is a great utility man for the Falcons. He ran for 110 yards on the season, appearing in 10 games. He averaged 6.1 yards per carry. Vogelgesang had one touchdown and was a prominent punt and kick returner gaining 92 yards. He was named the team’s Freshman Offensive Player of the Year. Look for him to fill the void at quarterback and/or continue to return punts and kicks.
