Awards winners have been announced for the 2000 UW-River Falls cross
country team, according to Coach Don Glover.
For the womens team, Candace Kroells (So., Comstock, Wis.) has been
named the teams Most Valuable Runner, Brenna Hogan (Jr., Lindstrom,
Minn.) and teams Most Improved Runner and Lisa Traxler (So., Menomonie,
Wis.) and Renee Silvis (Jr., Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) have been named
captains of the 2001 team.
"Kroells is a very aggressive runner," said Glover. "She
is one of the hardest workers on the team. She was our No. 3 runner at
the start of the season and finished as our No. 1 runner at the NCAA Regionals.
She is a very durable runner." Kroells has the ninth best time ever
for the Falcons, running a 19:42 this year.
"Hogan improved her time by 2:30 this year as compared to last season,"
said Glover. "She started the year as our No. 12 runner and finished
as No. 4."
"Traxler had a best time of 19:47 and had an outstanding season.
This was her first year of running cross country due to because of past
injuries. She emerged as one of our leaders. Silvis worked very hard this
year and showed great improvement. Shes a member of our track team
where she does well. She encourages all of her teammates," said Glover.
The Falcons placed seventh at the 2000 WIAC meet.
For the mens team, Tyler Odden (Fr., Barronette, Wis.) has been
named Most Valuable, Erik Hanson (So., St. Croix Falls, Wis.) was Most
Improved and Pat Lorentz (Jr., Hastings, Minn.) is the captain of next
years team.
"Odden was in his first year for us and its unusual for a freshman
to be named Most Valuable," said Glover. "But he was the leader
on the team. He was our No. 1 runner all season. His best time (27:24)
this year is about two minutes away from the all-time best time for the
Falcons. I think he can reach the top mark (25:25) in his career. I expect
him to be one of the better runners in the WIAC next year." Odden's
best time this year was 27:24, putting him in 13th place in the Flacons
Top 20 time list.
"Hansen had a 2:30 improvement from his best time last year,"
said Glover. "He is a fluid runner who was our No. 2 runner for most
of the year." His best time of 27:39 places him 20th in the Top 20
time list.
"Lorentz was our No. 5 runner for most of the season," said
Glover. "But he really came through at Regionals where he was our
No. 2 runner and made a one-minute improvement on his time (27.49). He
is a good leader and encourages his teammates."
The mens team placed ninth at the 2000 WIAC meet.
