| | | Details | This course is the first course for candidates enrolling in the Reading Teacher Certificate program (DPI Reading Teacher license) and the MSE-Reading degree program (DPI Reading Specialist license). It is one of three courses included in the one-month Reading Program Summer Institute that provides the foundation for all subsequent courses in the certificate and degree programs. Content includes the historical and philosophical/political foundations and trends of literacy learning and instruction; definitions of literacy and reading; developmental phases of reading development; overall influences on literacy acquisition; basic terminology used in literacy research, curriculum, and instruction; pedagogical considerations, including general conditions for learning to read and write; development of a personal philosophy about teaching reading as a reflective practitioner. Prerequisite: two years full-time licensed classroom teaching, enrollment in a specialty graduate program, or permission of the instructor. (SS) |
