DetailsAs an in-depth survey of modern Chinese history, this course discusses how the opening of China in the mid-19th century and the Chinese response to Western impact initiated the transformation of traditional Chinese state and society; how the drive for modernity made China a fertile ground for radical revolutions and social movements in the 20th century, including the Chinese Communist Movement; and how globalization and China's participation in it has led to the restructuring of Chinese society and political system since the 1980s.
