UW-River Falls Offers Two Ag Extension Courses

Courses in soil science and hazards waste will be offered through UW-River Falls this fall.
Hydric Soils and Wetland Environments-Soil Science will be offered for three credits as an interactive television course.
Students may attend the Thursday evening lectures at the UW-River Falls campus or at Chippewa Valley Technical College in Eau Claire. Field experiences will be held in River Falls on Monday evenings and Saturdays.
The course includes lectures and field study of the characteristics that make hydric soils and wetlands unique environments. Formation and interaction between hydric soils, wetland vegetation, and hydrology creating specific wetland types will be studied. Functions and values of wetlands to society and the regulatory aspects of wetland use and protection will be considered.
The class meets from 6:30-9 p.m. on the following Thursdays: Sept. 3, 10, 17, 24; Oct. 1, 8, 15, 22, 29; Nov. 5, 12, 19; and Dec. 3, 10, 17. The two-hour field exercises will be held on Mondays, Sept. 14, 21; Oct. 12, 19. The four-hour field exercises will be held on Saturdays, Oct. 3 and 24.
Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response will be offered for two graduate or undergraduate credits, or can be taken as a noncredit, certification course. The course meets Hazardous Operations Certification.
It provides an overview of the pertinent environmental regulations with major emphasis on the scientific basis for toxicology and chemistry of hazardous materials. The class will meet on the following dates at UW-River Falls: Oct. 23 1-7:30 p.m.; Oct. 24, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.; Oct. 30, 8 a.m.-7:30 p.m.; Oct 31 8: a.m. - 4:30 p.m.; November 7 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
