UW-RF Senior Outreach Session to Begin

Area senior citizens can study a range of topics including prairie restoration, watercolor, mental health and art, and natural landscapes in Session I of the Senior Outreach Studies program at UW-River Falls.

The non-credit class program is in its 11th year at UW-RF. Classes are open to all area seniors who are 55 or older.

The, "Nature Walk III" segment of four consecutive Tuesdays will begin Sept. 16. The four Thursday sessions, "Area Artists," will begin Sept. 18.

The Tuesday dates, topics and presenters are:

  • Sept. 16: "Natural Landscapes/Native Plants-Lakeshore Stabilization" Professor Roger Swanson, UW-RF plant and earth science department.

  • Sept. 23: "Alaska: Geology: Glaciers and Earth Processes," Professor Sam Huffman, UW-RF plant and earth science department.

  • Sept. 30: "Day Long Bus Tour: The Mississippi from Prescott to Wabasha" with lunch at the Anderson House in Wabasha, Minn. Jim Harrison, public affairs director, Minnesota-Wisconsin Boundary Commission.

  • Oct. 7: "Prairie Restoration" Sonja Moseman, Native Heritage Landscapes, Hastings, Minn.

  • The Thursday dates, topics and presenters are:

  • Sept. 18: "Watercolor and Pastels" Barb Pinc, artist, Studio 61: Art for All Ages, Hastings, Minn.

  • Sept. 25: "Mental Health and Art" Harold Henson, River Falls.

  • Oct. 2: "Creations in Wood" Jim Gebbard, folk artist, Elmwood.

  • Oct. 9: "Taking Traditional Watercolor a Step Further," De Hoekstra, River Falls.

  • Each class session meets from 9:30 -11:30 a.m. and includes a presentation, coffee break and discussion period. Classes are held in Rodli Commons.
