By Becky Wensel
UW-RF News Bureau
From three practices with the New Orleans Saints to the popular autograph night with players and coaches, the ninth season of the Kansas City Chiefs Summer Training Camp will offer plenty for football fans.
The Chiefs will return to UW-River Falls on July 31 and will break camp on Aug. 20. There will be one exhibition game during camp against the Titans in Kansas City on Sunday, Aug. 15.
In addition to watching All-Pros Derrick Thomas and Andre Rison competing in a professional football practice, the Chiefs under new Head Coach Gunther Cunningham will bring former Vikings quarterback Warren Moon to camp, as well as Thorp, Wis., native Mike Maslowski as a free agent linebacker. There are several additional exciting activities planned during the Chiefs 1999 camp at UW-River Falls.
Daily practices, open and free to the public, will take place twice daily from 8:30 - 10:30 a.m. and 3:10 to 5:15 p.m. at the Ramer Field Sports Complex. The complex features four fields along with two multi-purpose buildings, the W. H. Hunt Arena and the Knowles Center. The Chiefs use the two buildings as locker rooms, training rooms, for weight training purposes and meetings. Tours of the facilities are available during the practices.
One of the most popular events during camp is Family Fun Night, which is moved to a new night. It will be on Thursday, Aug. 12. This is the only night practice the Chiefs hold during camp. The gates will open at 4 p.m., with autographs of coaches and players at 6 p.m. and practice at 7 p.m. The evening will feature many free items for kids, and with a fireworks display at the end of the practice. Admission is $3 for adults and is free to those under 18.
The New Orleans Saints will visit camp on Friday, Aug. 6 and Saturday, Aug. 7. Fans will get the chance to see Head Coach and hall of famer Mike Ditka, Heisman Trophy winner Ricky Williams, and other all-stars from both teams in head-to-head match-ups. Practices on Friday are free and will be at 9:25 - 11:10 a.m. and 3:15 - 5:10 p.m. Practices on Saturday will be from 9 - 11 a.m. Admission will be $4 for adults, $2 for children ages 6-12, and is free to children 5 and under. Following the Chiefs/Saints Saturday morning practice there will be a Punt, Pass, and Kick Competition for boys and girls ages 8 - 13. Prizes will be awarded to all winners and the competition is free. Those wishing to participate can register for the event that morning.
All practice times are subject to change. Fans are encouraged to call the Chiefs hot line at 1-800-4-KCC-KCC to confirm all practice times.
