Nature, Music Senior Outreach Topics
Nature and music will be the topics for Session III of Senior Outreach Studies, sponsored by UW-River Falls Continuing Education Extension.
Classes will begin on Tuesday, March 19 and Thursday, March 21 and will continue for another three weeks. All classes are held from 9:30-11:30 a.m. in Room 137-38 of Rodli Commons, and are open to all area seniors 55 years or older, and each session includes a speaker, coffee break and discussion.
Tuesdays' classes, titled "Nature Walk," will explore various aspects of nature, including birds, wildflowers, and life on the Mississippi River.
Here is a listing of the presenters and their topics, by date:
March 19, Boz Metzdorf, a professional wildlife photographer, video maker, and naturalist, will discuss wild birds with an emphasis on bluebirds.
March 26, Nell Henry, a Raptor Center volunteer at the University of Minnesota, will present a program on "Close Encounters with Raptors."
April 2 will focus on life along the Mississippi River led by naturalist and trapper Kenneth Salwey.
April 9 will be presented by Peg Kohring, a biologist and senior manager of the Kinnickinnic River Land Trust, who will discuss Wisconsin area wildflowers.
The Thursday classes will explore several facets of music.
Presenters and their topics by date are:
March 21. Music Professor Kris Tjornehoj will discuss the National Standards as they affect music in America, and she will also discuss selections to be heard at an upcoming Coffee Concert at the Ordway.
March 28. Organist Katherine Ulivilden Moen and trumpeter Robert Brownlow will perform a piece based on Chagall's "Windows" in a concert at Abbott Concert Hall in the Kleinpell Fine Arts Building.
April 4 class will involve a bus trip to the Ordway for a Coffee Concert. The concert will feature the Minnesota Orchestra and Gil Shaham, violinist. It's limited to 25 participants and includes an additional fee of $21 for the ticket and partial payment for the bus ride.
April 11. Music department faculty member David Milne will discus "Jazz and other American music."
Senior Outreach Studies members will receive information through the mail. Others who are interested can call 715/425-3256 for information regarding class fees and registration.
