Regional Dance Festival Draws UW-RF Students

Twenty UW-River Falls dance theatre members will participate in the Great Lakes Regional American College Dance Festival Feb. 29 through March 3 at Western Michigan University.

Over 500 students and faculty from a 10-state area will be participating in the festival, which will include four days of classes, informal showings, banquets, seminars and performances for individuals from 38 college and university dance programs. It will feature over 50 master classes in modern, jazz, ballet and ethnic dance.

The UW-RF Dance Theatre will present three dances at the festival. Student choreographers Amy Ely, Elk Mound, and Christina Giessinger, River Falls, and faculty member Karla Zhe will present choreography for a blind adjudication and an informal concert.

The adjudication process gives faculty and students the opportunity to have their choreography critiqued by professionals and can lead to regional and national recognition.

In the blind adjudication process, evaluators critique each dance without any background on the choreographer or dance program; therefore, dances from all schools are evaluated with the same expectations regardless of size, dance program and level of experience.

The UW-RF dancers and choreography will be adjudicated along with dancers and choreographers from some of the major graduate and undergraduate dance programs in the Midwest. Some of the 50 programs participating include the University of Minnesota, University of Michigan, UW-Madison, UW-Milwaukee and the University of Illinois-Champagne/Urbana.
