UW-RF Commencement Ceremonies Set for Dec. 16
An expected 350 bachelorıs and masterıs degree candidates will participate in commencement ceremonies at UW-River Falls on Saturday, Dec 16. The ceremony will begin at 2 p.m. in the Robert P. Knowles Physical Education and Recreation Center.
The commencement address will be delivered by Professor Karen Klyczek, chair of the biology department, who will speak on the subject of lifelong learning. Klyczek, who joined the faculty at UW-RF in 1989, was named the Universityıs 2000 Distinguished Teacher . The title is the most prestigious award the University can bestow on a member of itıs teaching staff.
Chancellor Ann Lydecker will confer degrees, with the assistance of Provost and Vice-Chancellor Robert Milam. Dean William Anderson of the College of Agriculture, Food & Environmental Sciences; Dean Karen Viechnicki of the College of Education and Graduate Studies; Dean Gorden Hedahl of the College of Arts and Sciences; and Department Chair Jacque Foust of the School of Business and Economics will present the students from their respective schools to the chancellor.
During the ceremonies, the Universityıs Outstanding Service Award will be presented to Linda Beedy, a third-grade teacher, for her exemplary work with UW-RF student teachers. For nearly 13 years, Beedy has organized field placements at Highwood Hills Elementary School in St. Paul, where she teaches. She has been responsible for the placement of nearly half of the Universityıs student teachers each year.
Beedy has also served as a mentor to two students each semester. Over the 13-year period, she personally mentored 52 elementary education majors, spending 100 hours with each of them in her classroom.
The Outstanding Service Award, sponsored by the Universityıs Alumni Association, was established in 1983 to recognize an individual, corporation, or governmental body which has made exemplary contributions to the mission of the University. The contributions may include personal time and energy, leadership, support and/or monetary donations.
