UW-RF to Offer Financial Planning Program

The College of Business and Economics at UW-River Falls has registered with the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards to provide a new financial planning certificate program, designed to help individuals enter and succeed in the financial planning profession. The profession is an increasingly popular option for those seeking a career based on helping people live their dreams.

An independent certifying organization, the CFP board awards the CFP ®, Certified Financial Planner and CFP certification marks. Students completing all five courses under the UW-River Falls certificate program will be eligible to sit for the national CFP certification examination administered by the CFP board.

"The CFP board is pleased to have an educational institution of the caliber of UW-River Falls now offering its approved financial planning curriculum," said Patricia P. Houlihan, CFP Board of Governors chair.

"As student interest in financial planning as a career continues to grow, we anticipate that the UW-River Falls program will contribute significantly to the number of qualified candidates seeking to sit for our CFP certification examination," she said.

College of Business and Economics Dean Barbara Nemecek noted, "The College is particularly proud to be offering this new program. It exemplifies the College's mission to offer programs that will meet the continuing business education needs of the people in our region, and it is the first CFP program to be offered in this region of the state. We intend for this program to be the beginning point for future business continuing education program offerings."

Besides preparing individuals for CFP certification, the program provides practical training for anyone currently employed in a variety of financial, legal and administrative professions. The courses may also meet continuing education requirements.

The first class will begin in January. Registration for the course, "Financial Planning Process and Insurance," is now open. The class location and schedule is designed to be convenient for working individuals, and can be obtained online at www.uwrf.edu/ogs.

For more information about the financial planning certificate program or to enroll in the class, contact Michelle Hadley, Office of Outreach and Graduate Studies at UW-RF, at 715/425-3256, or by email at fp@uwrf.edu.

CFP ®, Certified Financial Planner and the CFP insignia are certified marks owned by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. These marks are awarded to individuals who successfully complete the CFP board's initial and ongoing certification requirements.

As part of considering a school's application to register its program, the CFP board compares the program with the financial planning-related topics identified in extensive job-task analysis studies undertaken by the board in 1987, 1994 and 1999. These job-task analyses found that individuals should demonstrate mastery of those topics before they can be considered qualified to provide competent, professional financial planning services.

The topics to be mastered can be categorized into the following broad subject areas: financial planning process; general principles; risk management and insurance strategies; investment theory and strategies; investment vehicles; tax computations; tax planning strategies; employee benefits; government plans; retirement planning strategies; estate planning strategies; and the CFP board's code of ethics and professional responsibility.
