Laura Fuentes y Calicanto to Perform at UW-RF
Laura Fuentes y Calicanto, a Latin American foursome, will sing and play several instruments from the countries of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Peru, and Venezuela on Wednesday, Oct. 16.
It is set for 8 p.m., at the William Abbott Concert Hall in the Klienpell Fine Arts Building at UW-River Falls. The event is sponsored by the UW-RF Wyman Performance Series.
Fuentes was born to North American parents living in Santiago, Chile, where in 1973 a military coup led to the execution and imprisonment of many people. Forced into exile, her family fled to Madison, Wis., where she studied the music and culture of her native Chile at UW-Madison.
Fuentes has performed nationally and recorded four CDs as the lead singer with the musical groups Sotavento, Paraguas and Madisalsa. In 1998 she released her first solo album titled, "Sobrevida." Fuentes now resides in Santiago, Chile, and travels throughout America educating listeners about other cultures and instilling in them an appreciation of Central and South American music.
Wyman Series events are open to students and the public. Admission for students is free, and the cost for non-students is $5. For more information contact the UW-RF Leadership Center at 715/425-4911.
