Book Club Invites Participants
The Lion's Paw Book Club at the Chalmer Davee Library at UW-River Falls invites community members, faculty, staff and students to participate in its gatherings during the academic year 2004-05.
The club meets on the second Wednesday of the month from September through December and February through May in the Library's second floor breezeway. Anyone is welcome to attend and need not have read the books to sit in on sessions.
Featured books are available in the University Bookstore in the Hagestad Student Center, and several copies of each book are also available in the Library's collection.
On Wednesday, Sept. 8, the book "The Professor and the Madman" by Simon Winchester will be discussed. The book club will be led by retired UW-RF math Professor Ed Rang from 3-4 p.m. in the Chalmer Davee Library Breezeway. The book is part homage to the greatest reference work of all time, the Oxford English Dictionary, part mystery, and part intellectual history of Victorian England. "The Professor and the Madman" tells the parallel stories of the dictionary's genius editor and one of his most prolific contributors, an insane American doctor committed to an asylum for murder.
The next meeting is Oct. 13 and will highlight "Ishmael: An Adventure of the Mind and Spirit" by Daniel Quinn. The group will be led by Dean for Student Development and Campus Diversity Roger Ballou.
