Irish Folklore Heart of Children's Play Opening the SCVST Season
The St. Croix Valley Summer Theatre, in conjunction with the River Falls Community Theatre, will be presenting the children's play "Rafferty Rescues the Moon" with book and lyrics by June Anderson and music by Larry Kirwan.
"Rafferty Rescues the Moon" will be performed on June 29 and 30 at 7 p.m. and June 30 and July 1 at 1 p.m. at the Syse Theatre in the Kleinpell Fine Arts Building, UW-River Falls.
"Rafferty Rescues the Moon" tells the story of Rafferty, a young Irish boy who sets out to rescue the moon, which has been swallowed by the terrible Great Fish. Rafferty is accompanied on his heroic journey by Spider Murphy, a panicky poet, and the bombastic Finbar Bat. The trio are confronted by a host of other-worldly creatures from Irish folklore, including Olivia, who just might be a witch; Boneless, a ghostly wraith of the boglands; and Mergatroyd the Merrow, a slippery sea sprite. Rafferty must use his wits as well as his heart to rescue the Moon from the bottom of the Slaney River and return her to her home in the sky.
Abbie Testa returns to her childhood in directing this year's children's production. "St. Croix Valley Summer Theatre has been a part of my life since I was in diapers," says Testa. "My mom's [Emily Lyon-Hansen] involvement in the company allowed me to learn about all aspects of theatre early on. The opportunity to direct 'Rafferty Rescues the Moon' for SCVST is a way to stay involved in a company I believe in. This is the perfect play; it has great characters, witty language, adventure, magic, and live music that children will love and adults will enjoy."
All seats are $4. For more information please call the SCVST box office at 715-425-3114 or 1-800-228-5423.
