Regents Laud Coombs for Leadership During Campus Transitions
The University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents issued a Resolution of Appreciation June 11 to UW-River Falls Provost Virginia Coombs for her service as Interim Chancellor after the death of Chancellor Ann Lydecker.
"Virginia Coombs has effectively served as Interim Chancellor and guided the University of Wisconsin-River Falls through a difficult period in the campus' history," read the proclamation signed by Toby Marcovich, president of the UW-System Board of Regents.
"She assumed the duties of Interim Chancellor to carry on the vision of Ann Lydecker, a dear friend and colleague. When an upsetting racial incident during her tenure presented significant challenges to all UW-RF students, faculty and staff, Coombs brought the community together for important conversations that strengthened relationships across campus.
"Coombs worked to support the continued success of students, faculty and staff and made special efforts to celebrate their achievement. In accepting the position of Interim Chancellor, Coombs has helped UW-RF prepare for a continued tradition of excellence in the future."
Coombs, who has returned to her previous position as Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, was appointed as Interim Chancellor by UW System Katharine Lyall in the hours following Lydecker's death in a traffic accident in rural Pierce County on March 25.
Virgil Nylander, former Vice Chancellor for Administration and Finance who had retired in January, has returned to serve as Interim Chancellor until the Chancellor post is filled.
