E-Commerce Workshop to be Held at UW-River Falls

The intricacies of small businesses effectively and ethically sending e-mail messages and newsletters to their customers will be the topic of a workshop March 18.

The St. Croix Valley Regional Tourism Alliance is offering the workshop at UW-River Falls. The session will be held from 9 a.m. to noon in the Blue Lab in the basement of the Chalmer Davee Library. The class will be taught by staff from Pressenter!

The workshop will focus on how to use e-mail to send electronic newsletters or other commerce information to potential customers.

Topics to be discussed include:

• The best practices for composing an e-mail message for e-commerce. Text, subject line, length and plain text or embedded html will be discussed.
• Newsletters: whether to attach them as a PDF or post them to a Web site and driving customers to the site.
• Soliciting customers for e-mail messages by harvesting their names from your Web site and building a database or buying the names from suppliers.
• The ethical difference between mailing to interested prospects and spamming.
• Handling batch e-mails: doing it yourself vs. hiring as Internet Service Provider or Listserve to distribute them.
