UW-RF To Host Third Annual Sex Conference
Sex and communication in college will be the themes of an all-day conference scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 20, at Rodli Commons on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. The conference titled, "College Couples Communication: Same Sex, Opposite Sex," is the third in the "Sex and the American College Student" conference series.
About 200 people from 25 Minnesota and Wisconsin colleges and universities are expected to attend, including faculty, student development staff, counselors, health care providers and students.
According to UW-RF Dean of Students Roger Ballou, the focus of this year's conference is methods for improving communication among college students, particularly around the issue of sex. "It has been shown time and again that poor communication can play a role in dangerous and/or unwanted sexual activity," said Ballou.
Fred Hebert, associate dean at UW-Stevens Point and noted sex educator, will deliver the keynote address. Susan Nienaber, counselor and marriage therapist at Westminster Counseling Center in Minneapolis, and Sheri Atkinson, lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender coordinator at St. Cloud State University, will present a three-hour workshop as a feature of the conference. Nienaber, with AtkinsonŐs assistance, will present a current and popular model of couple's communication that can be taken back to campuses and taught to students.
The conference will begin at 8:30 a.m. with opening remarks by Chancellor Ann Lydecker and will adjourn at 3 p.m. For more information, contact Roger Ballou at 715-425-3711.
