Drew Anderson
When I started at UW–River Falls I was going for a degree in Biology. During my sophomore year I decided to switch to a double major in Physics and Mathematics; so, school takes up most of my time. Any free time I get I enjoy spending with my friends and playing volleyball, basketball, and golf.
Last summer I conducted cosmic ray research. I worked with two other undergraduate students measuring the effect that varying water height has on the cosmic ray count rate from DOMs (Digital Optical Modules). The results from this research will be used to check the accuracy of a program that is being written to simulate cosmic ray showers.
This fall I will be traveling on an icebreaker, Oden, from Sweden to Uruguay. On the boat I will be monitoring the data collected by DOMs, which are measuring cosmic ray count as the cosmic rays pass through a tank filled with ice. This information will be used to determine how many photons are seen as a function of the energy of the particle that passes through the tank.
Once I am finished with my undergraduate degree I plan on going on to graduate school. However, at this point I am still unsure what specific field I want to end up working in. I’ll most likely end up continuing with Physics, but I have also been considering going into Electrical Engineering.
