Crate Building

IceCube 2007 Home

How the crate was packed and shipped

This framework serves as the bracing for the bottom section of the crate.

Then we attached a piece of plywood to the bracing and then attached one of the sides. This is Michael Tate who assisted Dr. Madsen in the construction of the crates.

After we had both sides screwed and glued on, we attached 2x2 braces on the sides and then put in the 2x4 cross beams

Next we started on the shelves that would hold the scaffolding for the sunshades. This picture shows the inside of one of the shelves.

This is Dr. Madsen putting the final touches on one of the shelves

To attach the shelves we had to put in screws from the outside, and measure them so that the screws went into the horizontal part of the shelves. This picture also shows the 2x2 braceing that was put on earlier.

This is a picture of the shelves and the top that was put on.

Finally we screwed on the end pieces, flipped the crate over, and attached 2 layers of 2x4's on the bottom to allow forklift access.
