University
of Wisconsin System President Kevin Reilly made the formal announcement
on February 11, 2005, that Dr. Donald Betz has accepted the chancellor position
at River Falls. The UW-RF Search and Screen Committee
chaired by Dr. Terry Brown, Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences,
forwarded five candidate names to Board of Regents Special
Committee for the UW-RF Chancellor Search. After a comprehensive interview
process on campus and in Madison, Dr. Betz was selected. He is expected
to assume his new duties on July 1, 2005.

Ken Carter, the real coach, on Monday, Feb. 7 in the North Hall Auditorium.
Carter champions the philosophy “average is not good enough.”

The Outstanding Service Award was established to recognize individuals outside of the university community who have made contributions to UW-RF through support of our goals and their volunteer efforts on our behalf. These awards are recognized once a year at fall commencement.

Dahlka Garden was dedicated. The creation of the Dahlka Garden, established
by the late Dennis Dahlka, provides students with a peaceful place
for study and relaxation.

Spring semester finds students in the University
Advancement Call Center busy calling alumni for the Fund for Excellence
College campaigns. These funds go directly to the colleges to establish
scholarships, provide student research grants, support alumni programming
and much more. The success of the Fund for Excellence campaigns and the
support of the alumni has been greatly appreciated by the Deans of each
college. Thank you for your continued support of UW-RF.
UW-RF 2002 Distinguished Alumnus and China explorer Wong How Man returned
to campus this fall to share his story with the campus community. He outlined
his research, exploration and conservation work with CERS, the China
Exploration and Research Society. CERS and UW-RF have created a pilot project
to assist Tibetan communities to learn to make Yak cheese and hopefully
create a cottage industry from the sale of Yak milk, butter and cheese.

Distinguished Alumnus Day was celebrated this fall with a visit to campus
by Sigurd Hanson, an internationally respected humanitarian whose 25 years
of work has led him to Africa, Pakistan, Afghanistan and central Asia. Sigurd
presented to a group of over 350 students and faculty on “Global Trends
and Challenges and the Role of Humanitarian Assistance.”
