A BRAND NEW LIGHT
BY JOE TOUGAS
Everybody looks up.
When first-time visitors enter the new University Center, heads tilt back. Eyes go up.
From the spacious main entryway, flanked by a busy game room to the right and a cyber café to the left, they look up to follow the rise of the bare concrete columns which, among the curved walls, natural-wood ceilings and diverse color schemes, give the place touches of a timeless, metro-chic feel.
They look up to see international flags hanging down, or a wide staircase heading to the second floor, where a busy walkway stretches over the main lobby.
They need only walk straight ahead to see, on the other side of the building, how high the southern-exposure windows rise above the activity.
First-timers look up, while those who have watched this $34 million project become reality find themselves looking ahead to the center having a profound impact on the goals —and image—of the university.
“If you’ve drawn conclusions about the university,” said UWRF Chancellor Don Betz, “it’s time to reexamine them.”
