Shelby (Ludwig) Obershaw 1959
and her husband, Charles, received honorary doctorates of human letters from Cal State San Bernardino’s College of Education. Shelby was an elementary school teacher in San Bernardino for 21 years. She later served on the San Bernardino City Unified School District board. She also volunteered at a county school for homeless children and serves on the College of Education Advisory Board, the San Bernardino Symphony, and other panels.

Mary has spent 22 years teaching biology and anatomy at St. Francis High School. She is the department chair for science. Larry is retired from the Air Force. They reside on a pumpkin farm in West Chicago, Ill.
Thomas Knutson 1965
received the 2007 Phi Beta Delta Award for Outstanding Contributions to International Education. PBD is an honor society for international scholars. In accepting the award, he noted that his interest in international cultural exchange began when as a student he participated in UWRF's first Semester Abroad program in 1963. Thomas is a professor of communication studies at California State University, Sacramento, and an adjunct professor of graduate studies at Bangkok University in Thailand.
Susan Ludvigson 1965
recently had a poetry book published, Escaping the House of Certainty, by Louisiana State University Press (see alumni book club article in this section). She is the author of eight previous volumes of poems and the recipient of Guggenheim, Rockefeller, Fullbright, NEA, and Witter Bynner fellowships. She teaches at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C.

writes that he's trying to retire and have some fun. Right now, though, he's spending a lot of time rebuilding and adding on to a house in the Town of Richmond, consulting on surveying and developing, and traveling for the State of Wisconsin Registration Board for Surveyors and the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying. Still, he finds time to have a cup of coffee and enjoy family time with grandchildren.

He is currently the treasurer of the Munster Education Foundation. He is also a past lieutenant governor of the duneland division of the Indiana District of Kiwanis International. was chosen as one of six community leaders to be honored with the Spurgeon Award at the 26th annual Pride of St. Paul celebration. He was recognized for career excellence and community service and being a positive role model for young people.

was one of six educators honored by a Minnesota educational foundation for outstanding accomplishments and contributions to student learning. She received the $10,000 Award for Excellence. She teaches alternative education art to junior high and high school students and has been teaching for 25 years.
John Hoch 1981
was named Wisconsin's "Coach of the Three-Quarter Century" by Scholastic Coach and Athletic Director magazine. He has been head football coach at Lancaster High School since 1982, winning four Division IV state championships and two Division V state crowns. He was inducted into the UWRF Athletic Hall of Fame in 2003.
Joan Leuck-Waak 1982
retired in 2006 after 23 years with the Los Angeles Police Department as a Sgt +II. She worked various patrol assignments both as an officer and supervisor during her time on the force and was assigned to numerous specialized units, including tactics and firearms training. In 1998 she earned the department's Medal of Valor for her actions when confronting a gunman who was armed with two assault rifles.

and her Golden Retriever, Wrigley, won the AKC/Eukanuba National Obedience Championship in Tampa, Fla., in 2005. In 2006, her dog Shale was second runner up in the championship. In 2005 and 2006, she represented the USA/AKC World Cup Obedience Team and traveled to Birmingham, England, where she competed with teams from 10 different countries, similar to the Olympics of dog obedience. She works full-time for Wells Fargo Home Mortgage as a business analyst. She and her husband, Gary, own a part-time dog obedience training school in Papillon, Neb.
