Faculty Senate and Faculty Council (1934-present)

Background: Faculty government on the River Falls campus had its beginnings in 1911 with the establishment of a number of faculty committees. Prior to 1946, there was no official faculty governance organization. Most administrative matters requiring faculty involvement were handled during monthly faculty meetings over which the college president presided. A standing committee structure coordinated such various aspects of the school’s business as athletics, alumni relations, or graduation requirements. Ad hoc committees were created as needed.

With the post-World War II enrollment boom, the number of staff members increased rapidly. President E.H. Kleinpell proposed establishing a Faculty Council to replace the system of monthly meetings. The resulting five-member appointed council considered faculty-related matters until 1967, when the Faculty Senate was organized. The Senate is composed of an elected representative for every 30 faculty members within each academic college and seven elected at-large representatives. Scope and Content: UWRF Series 83 consists of three series: Records of the Faculty Council (1956-1967), records of the Faculty Senate (1967-present), and records of faculty committees (1934-present). Council records include correspondence and minutes of council and committee meetings. Senate records include agendas, minutes, reports, correspondence, and memoranda.
